They should call it the 'Gold Hands' edition! Ebert's review from '72 is great

Quote:
They have finally done it: Made the most disgusting, contemptuous insult to decency ever to masquerade as a documentary.

honestly I 'll wait to read reviews on the transfer, but this doesn't even include the alternate Italian cut of the movie.

I scored the long OOP Mondo Cane BU box set mid-2019 for a song and it took me honestly a whole year to get through all four films in the set , especially Africa Addio and Goodbye Uncle Tom. Absolutely amazed this even on it's own is getting UHD treatment but for those still dipping their toes into Italian exploitation cinema: this is still very, very tough viewing with or without the context as to how Jacopetti and Prosperi went about making it.

Approach with serious caution.

So, objectively speaking, does the film have redemptive qualities to compel viewing?

Yes, serous question. The film does appear rather interesting, especially given cultural circumstances surrounding its period of creation.

If you like other shocking Italian films such as Salo and Cannibal Holocaust you'll want to pick this up.

What's in the alternate Italian cut that is missing from the 123 minute version BU is putting out?

You're kidding right? Both cuts look like two completely different movies - there are a ton of cuts, trims, alternate footage, sequencing of scenes. I think the comparisons are denoted in detailed on film-censorship.com's website

No, I wasn't kidding. Not having ever seen any cut, I'm not familiar with this one.

There's no entry (that I see) for this movie at: http://www.movie-censorshp.com. I tried searching with the Italian title "Addio zio Tom" as well.

I do now see the different run times at IMDB in the Tech Specs section, but no details on what the extra footage is.

I was somewhat being cheeky with my response but the longer version comes across as more of a documentary movie with an opening of more modern US history to ground in the racial disparity and conflict with the then and recent assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The shorter version comes across as seedier and more exploitation / "grindhouse" - the amount of alternate footage and scenes is extensive (to say the least)

Oh and sorry for incorrectly wording "movie censorship" website wrong

No worry, I knew which site you meant. Thanks for the info on the different versions. Frankly, I'm interested in this as an exploitation flick, not as an ACTUAL documentary. So give me the seedy, grindhouse version.

It's too bad we can't get both cuts, though.

Default Where for art thou Uncle Tom!

I see the hysteria has started about the 'cutness' and 'uncutness' of what might come from Blue Underground [if at all].
The so called 'Italian' version of about 135min is overly long, padded with protest footage and takes away from the inherent exploitation and sleeziness of the original cut. This is definitely a case of less is more and the shorter original cut is supremely better....BUT....If history is anything to go by, there will be certain people who will get all obsessed with 'what am I missing out on?..'what's been cut?'..'is there extra gore and sex?' (thinking it's censorship cuts when it really isn't).

Extended Aliens (1986) = better than theatrical Aliens (1986)
Extended Terminator 2 (1991) = better than theatrical Terminator 2 (1991)

It is simply not the case with Goodbye Uncle Tom, do yourself a favour and just watch old newsreel footage of the civil rights movement protests on youtube and buy the 123 minute version of GBUT...

PS. Riz Ortolani's soundtrack is awesome!
