Default Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)

July 15, 2022 in cinemas via Sony Pictures

Quote:
Where the Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, isolating the sharp and resilient Kya from her community. Drawn to two young men from town, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the community as the main suspect.
Director: Olivia Newman
Cast: Daisy Edgar-Jones, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, David Strathairn

I’m a bit wary of “global phenomenon” adaptations, especially if I’ve not heard of them. Seems alright though.

I read this book not too long ago--it was a solid read and I'm intrigued by the film. The trailer looks true to the plot and characters, I recognize a lot of scenes in it.

My only gripe is that everything looks so dang clean, whereas I always envisioned more rustic and scummy environments out of the book, and Kya herself looks extremely clean and healthy for someone who had to live in the marsh for years. I expected more grit or something, I dunno. Otherwise it looks decent.

Daisy Edgar-Jones is a fantastic actress. I've been interested in this since hearing she was starring in it. I bought the book as soon as I did but haven't read it yet. Which actually works out for the best because now I can read it and picture the characters and locations like they are in the trailer rather than picturing it one way in my head and then having it be nothing like I imagined. That's usually what happens with movies adapted from books. Hopefully this will lead to less disappointment. Movie looks very good. I'll definitely go see it. Will read the book soon.

Doesn't seem to be much buzz about this considering that it's coming out in a month and a half. Has anyone seen the trailer in theaters yet?

I think I've had it with three but only remember it being with The Lost City and Happening for certain.

I do want to see it, but having read the book and already knowing how it ends, I'm not in a rush.

I was stuck in the first 80 pages of the book for a couple months. I had such a difficult time getting into it. I finally got interested shortly after hitting page 100 last week. I enjoyed it overall. Was definitely like a Nicholas Sparks story but with a murder thrown in. Not sure why it's as insanely popular as it is but I know quite a few people that loved it. I am looking forward to the movie though. I'm sure I'll like it.

I liked it. 4/5. Minus one point for no singing crawdads.

Also, about that Delia Owens...

in spoiler tags an article that has possible spoilers:

[Show spoiler]The Atlantic - Where the Crawdads Sing Author Wanted for Questioning in Murder

A televised 1990s killing in Zambia has striking similarities to Delia Owens’s best-selling book turned movie.

Question for those who have seen it, which is a bit spoiler-y. Just trying to gauge if I can take my friend with me to see it.

[Show spoiler]Do they still have the rape scene from the book in the film? How intense is it?

I've not seen it, but the British film censor's report says the following:

[Show spoiler]sexual violence and sexual threat
A man slaps and punches a woman, pins her down and attempts to rape her; however, she is able to overpower him and escape.

violence
There are scenes of domestic abuse, child neglect and abandonment, including a scene in which a man strikes his wife and children.

There are infrequent moderate sex scenes, with brief thrusting detail but no visible nudity; verbal sex references are also moderate and infrequent. There are brief images of a dead body without visible injuries'.

It's classified as a 15-certificate over here, i.e, you have to be 15 or over to see it.

I liked the book a lot and I had been very excited about seeing the movie but I have been dismayed by the less than stellar reviews. I'm glad you liked it, it gives me hope that it's better than the critics say. Also, although RT critics give it a dismal 33% positive, the early audiences ratings on RT are 93% positive (likely predominantly fans of the book).

I'll probably see it Sunday.

Honestly, I may grade Southern movies or Southern tales a bit easier than the average person.

But we get so few true ones these days. Peanut Butter Falcon was probably the best one. Sling Blade comes to mind too. This movie is below these two, but if you liked the book and want to see it come to life - this is your ticket, you just won't be surprised like I was (I didn't read the book.)

I imagine the book was a little better as this film lacks a lot of details here and there that kept me from being fully engaged. I think a better writer might have handled things better as this film has the time but spends most of it on the romance part. The story is really about a woman's independence and the murder storyline gets pushed to the side. It is well cast all around and shot well.
