Arrow will be releasing True Romance on 4K in the US now! There will be a Limited Edition with standard case, as well as a Deluxe Edition with Dual-Format Steelbook, plus a separate Steelbook release coming June 28th. A separate Blu-ray LE will also be released.

I've almost ordered it about 5 or 6 times in the past couple of moths, too. Never actually expected a US release, just hoped for a lower import price somewhere. Either way my gut instinct to not order right away worked in my favor.

Yes, a rights issue. BarnDoor explained why the US didn't originally get it. Barndoor or someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but unlike the UK, I believe Arrow were able to license it from from Sony for the US, since they now have a deal with them (Wild Things, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, etc..).

To cut to the chase, they didn't licence True Romance from Sony. In the US, you'll be aware that most Morgan Creek titles formerly with Warner Bros ended up with Sony when WB's agreement ended.

Overseas however, Sony did not acquire the rights to the Morgan Creek catalogue. And so in the UK, Arrow grabbed a few titles from Morgan Creek (via Park Circus it seems). We first knew of this when Arrow announced bog-standard Arrow Films releases of True Romance, Last of the Mohicans, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and the 2 Ace Ventura films. We later saw Exorcist III, the first Morgan Creek title in the Video line. But to my knowledge there hasn't been one since, until True Romance.

Now I know what you're thinking - does this mean we might see Arrow Video editions of Last of the Mohicans, Robin Hood: PoT and the Ace Ventura films? The honest answer is no one knows. When Arrow first released these titles, I reasoned that they were makeshift releases, cheap cash cows until Arrow were ready to release proper editions for the Video line. True Romance gives me hope we might see the rest, but then they don't exactly scream 'Arrow Video' in the same way. And there may be further complications. Take Last of the Mohicans. Would getting access to the original negative - presumably now under the care of Disney in the US - prove tricky? And would Mann have any influence, possibly negating the inclusion of all 3 cuts? Who knows. All I can say is that I'd absolutely love to see Arrow Video editions of Last of the Mohicans and Robin Hood some day.

It's worth noting that Sony don't allow outside restorations, so we should probably be thankful they don't have this title now in the UK also.

Mostly like that is why, yes. They probably didn't have the US rights when they released the UK edition.

I was about to order the standard 4k ed. last week for $40 or so. Now I can use that towards a fancy edition.

I might be reading too much into what BarnDoor said. Does that mean there is potential Sony is doing their own restoration for True Romance?

Arrow are the ones that did the restoration work for the it, so it'll be the same as the UK releases. It's a different situation from titles that Sony hold the rights to worldwide. In those cases, like Wild Things, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, it is Sony that does the scanning and restoration work. But since Arrow already did it for True Romance when they licensed it for the UK, I'm sure Sony was okay just granting the licensing for the US. That's my take at least, BarnDoor could probably explain the situation better.

I had a feeling this would eventually get a US release. I could not resist and imported it from Zavvi. I’m getting used to those ratings logos but for those that cannot stand them…this will be the release to go after. The transfer is fantastic.

Instead of asking, I compared the extra lists here to my UK disc. Missing is the "new interview with Daniel Storm, co-founder of the annual True Romance Fest and owner of the original Cadillac". Not even sure if I bothered to watch that one yet, and probably not a huge loss to anyone but Mr. Storm.

Will be interesting to see what kinds of edits were done to other extras. This makes me happy I grabbed the UK LE version when it came out. Those of you who are 4K capable and didn't import are in for a treat, the transfer looks so ****ing good!
