Question Does the Samsung bd-up5000 (or any other dual format player) interest you?

Any real interest in this player here?
I think there are more neutral posters here in the closet scared to reveal themselves for fear of ridicule and banishment!
What really wrong with getting this, buying blu, and renting the occasional "other" disk?
(I'm a Pixar nut so these will be what I will want to own with the best PQ and AQ available)
Got to be careful. I'm new here and I might get "labeled"
(Flame suit? I need no stinking flame suit! I'm a grown man and can take it.)

Seriously, I'm keeping an eye out on this player and would like to see if any other brave souls here are too.
I've included a poll so others can vote anonymously.

That's not true. There are quite a few high profile posters here that have either already professed to being neutral or are leaning toward neutrality. Yeah I mean, anyone who comes out straight in support of a player like this will most likely be criticized by hardcore Blu-ray supporters, but that doesn't mean they can't find any sympathizers on this forum.

With that said, I don't own an HD DVD player nor any movies, and personally I don't plan on buying one either. But, a purchase of a player such as this could give someone a piece of mind that no matter which way this so called "format war" ends up, they'll be covered either way.

This player is the first one to fully support both formats.
It isn't cheap (so far I've seen just under $800 for preorders)
But it appears to have the latest chips, so 1.1 or even 2.0 might be possible. (crosses fingers)
It's the first player that has really sparked my interest for movie enjoyment.
After all isn't this the end game of all this?

No thanks, I don't want my player tainted with HDDVD.

Would you go as far as banning Samsung and LG for even making these?

Well, since Samsung says it'll carry a $400 premium, personally I'm not seeing the point since you can just buy an A2 or whatever for $200 in a few months.

I guess the advantage would be that it is all in one unit. No need for separate equipment.

I have one major gripe about dual players. Even after HD-DVD goes away and people simply use them to play the movies they bought, how long will they keep supporting dual players before they stop making them?

Seems to me HD-DVD could make its way to the landfill before DVD.

Well, here is hoping that happens!

Good news according to this:
http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/...04092007-1.htm

This tells me that this player has the hardware to do 1.1 and depending on how much storage it has (it does have some as required by the HD-DVD spec just the amount is unknown) should be 2.0 ready also.
Very nice.

The thing that I like about the knew Samsung player is that it uses an HQV processor (by Silicon Optix) so that alone already is something to look out for.

I think that when this comes out by Christmas, we should do a comparo on it versus the PS3 in terms of AQ and PQ.

A tech-spec/feature shootout in simpler terms

I've seen elsewhere where this may hit stores by mid-September. I too like the HQV processor.

The 2400 also sends out DTS-MA bitstream, so for those with capable receivers, this could be worth a purchase.

I could call them, but I doubt that would be a fruitful conversation.
They wouldn't confirm anything at IFA saying US specific announcements will be made at a more appropriate event. So no help there I'm afraid.

I would hold off though.

At the rate the poll is going, almost a third here (or 3500 members) are infidels!
