We have made this decision in order to create a new HDR grade for the 4K UHD release, working closely with director Robert Eggers who will be supervising. This is going to take some time but we felt it was an important decision to make and will allow us to present the film in the best possible way. We're very sorry about this delay but hope you'll agree it will be worth spending the additional time on this release. If you would like a refund please email us at this address with your order number. Second Sight Films."

I wonder why I didn't receive an email from them. So glad they decided to go back and work on the master. They must've received a lot of emails about the previous grading.

Interesting. Thought the current DV grade in the US release was already filmmaker approved.

Someone more knowledgeable than me can correct me but I think he or the DP gave an interview where he said he wasn't keen on HDR at all for The Witch because it brought out details from the shadows that he didn't want visible? I guess he's made peace with HDR but would like to tweak it?

Here's the interview with Eggers and Blaschke where they talk about the HDR at 7:00. They're unhappy with it not because of shadow detail per se but because the movie's low contrast:

I have a friend that reviews some of their 4K discs and he already received his screener for The Witch days ago. Now he's wondering if he's going to get a corrected disc or what.

I see.

This means the SS disc will be the definitive version then.

Excellent news. If ever there was a good reason for a delay, this is it.

Well, with this being a new and supervised transfer (I know the DP didn't approve of the current 4K out there), it looks like I'll be triple dipping on this (Blu -> 4K -> SS 4K).

You're saying that the Midsommar Japan 4K has the TC with English subs for non-English dialogue burned into the English audio track (like it was in theaters here in the US)? If that's the case then I need to get that ASAP... I also preferred the TC for Midsommar.

Yes, that's what I said (and also demonstrated shortly after).

Second Sight is my favorite boutique, methinks. I had already pre-ordered it, so them going back, with Eggers, and re-grading it is amazing.

Really glad this is getting re-done with Eggers approval. I can wait a little while longer until June.

If there's already a delay, would it be possible to add English subtitles for the hearing?
I know the movie in and out, but every time I watch with someone new, they always beg for subtitles because of the thick accent.
But yeah, triple dip for me as well.

The spec sheet for it has listed “Optional English subtitles for the hearing impaired” since the beginning.

For the hearing, as not deaf. No sound in brackets is what I mean.
