Runaways Review Thread (Spoilers)

Wasn't sure if there was interest in this movie or not so I hadn't posted anything on it yet, but a picture of Kristen Stewart has surfaced and it looks like she's getting the look down. Any interest in a Runaways biopic?

Twilight star Kristen Stewart hasn’t yet started shooting music video director Floria Sigismondi’s The Runaways, but she’s already transformed her hair to look more like famous rock’n'roller Joan Jett. The film is a biopic of the first successful all-girl hard rock band The Runaways (hence the title), which fell apart after four years due to management and money disputes. The movie also stars Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie and Stella Maeve as Sandy West. The movie will follow them from” the band’s meteoric rise as teenagers to their dissolution and disillusionment.” Sigismondi’s music videos have included Marilyn Manson’s Tourniquet, Christina Aguilera’s Fighter and The White Stripes’ Blue Orchid.

I'd be interested. I remember seeing a documentary on Showtime a few years ago about the band and all the members except Joan Jett contributed. I can't remember the name of it though.

I wonder who will play eccentric producer Kim Fowley? Willem Dafoe would be a good choice,he kinda looks like him!

I'm really looking forward to this! I've been a fan of Joan and from seeing Twilight, I think Kristen is a great actress and will definitely be able to rock like Joan!

Dakota Fanning is set to play the other frontwoman of the band Cherie Currie. Dakota is such a talented young actress as we all know.

i'm sorry but that statement just doesn't make sense. She was good in Adventureland but the acting in Twilight, from her and everyone else) was not good.

and even then the only song anyone liked was I love Rock n Roll

Looking foreward to this one. I like Kristen Stewart; first saw her in Zathura (I think it was called that). Never saw Twilight (never will) but I do like Joan Jett so I have confidence that this will be good. I'm not a huge fan of Dakota Fanning but I recognize her great talent in acting.

First Teaser Trailer is up in this article in WSJ (also shows the original band performance in Japan around mid-70s).

The movie will open at Sundance Film Festival in January.

Dakota Fanning, holy cow she looks different! Glad to see she doesn't look like a little girl anymore so she can take on different roles. If she keeps it up, she could be a hollywood legend at an early age.

Anyway, trailer looks pretty good, obviously a teaser because it makes me want to see more
I can't wait to see what Alia Shawkat looks like in this. I thought she was great in Arrested Development.

I liked the teaser too. Looks promising.

Somehow I didn't know Alia Shawkat was in this. Great in AD but the first time I saw her was State of Grace.

Nice to see that the writers decided to focus on Cherie & Joan, and not somuch on Lita Ford. I mean, come on, its not like Lita had a career after The Runaways, or had any hit songs or albums, or like anyone knows who she is or anything.

(and if she is featured in the script/film, you wouldn't know it from the trailer)

I have looked forward to this one for a long long time especially after I saw the documentary a few years back. I think the documentary will out due the movie but I hope not. I will be pretty mad if they screw this one up!!!! Here is my review on amazon of the documentary.........................I love to watch documentaries I saw this sometime in 05 when I was living in Germany, but there are only a handful that have enamored me and this one is my favorite. When I 1st heard their music and when I listen to it today it screams out rebellion to me. I always thought the band was way too underrated and any time I mention them or their music no one has a clue of what I am talking about. Also ther is something major and important to this documentary but no matter how hard I try I just cant explain it. Every time I watch it it moves me and leaves such an impression on me that I feel for hours to come! I was born in 1980 a little late to have experienced this exciting time in music history a time when you had such great Rock bands and Disco wich I also love ,wow what a mix!!! But I have always loved the greats like Black Sabbath,Led Zeppelin,Pink Floyd,Thin Lizzy,Kiss,Judas Priest,Hendrix, and so on and so on. They did such a phenomenal job of portraying the emotions the turmoil and excitement of what the girls of the Runaways may have felt and had to endure during this harsh and wild time in their lives. I can relate to them because I was out of the house almost permanently at the age of 14 myself and experienced the drugs,sex alcohol and wild wild nights for the next 5 years after that! And might I add I was "uh hem" never turned down by a woman in my teenage years lol, but music was always there for me it was my savior and a massive part of my life no matter what was going on or how bad and out of control things got. I can feel their pain and I can feel the loss that Sandy West describes at the end of the documentary just wishing they hadn't broken up. It is amazing and knee weakening to me to see some of their old footage of the 5 of them on stage rocking out just as hard as the great Rock n Roll bands of the 70's. Just the premise of 5 gorgeous women playing rock is amazing in itself and probably will not be redone successfully by any females for years to come. Their footage is dark and gritty and matches their music perfectly it is very raw and exhilarating. I am glad this movie was made before Sandy West passed away, so that we could see her points of view, and for me her speaking at the end is the most heart wrenching for me just wishing she could relive it once more knowing if their sleazy management wasn't involved and if they could have put their differences aside they could have done so much more and gone so much farther. I wish Joan Jett would have appeared so we could have got her point of view. As a child I remember falling in love with her from the moment I 1st saw her on MTV playing I love Rock n Roll. I know the movie of the runaways is debuting in theaters right now as I type this, but I feel it cannot match or be anywhere near as magnificent as the documentary. I don't feel that the actors like Dakota Fanning or Kristen Stewart know the magnitude of the Legends they are portraying, did they know anything about The Runaways prior to the premise of the film? A good thing I have seen is that the living Runaway members are coaching and helping the actors out, so there may be some hope after all. We will see how it turns out. But this is a must see documentary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would be interested in a movie like this. The late 70s is one of the best eras for American rock music. My only concern is these two actors are a little too squeaky-clean. (Reminds me of Leo DiCaprio in Gangs of New York or Orlando Bloom in...anything.) That's not to say The Runaways were hardcore street punk, but Dakota Fanning would be better suited as a Spice Girl or Josie and the *****cats.
