Thread op has been changed back. This is just a warning, please keep the thread on track and stay on topic. Do no make it into an argument thread or a personal blog thread. If so then the thread will be closed and a new HDR 3.0 will be created by the staff.

Easy answer: It all depends on what your TV is capable of. Even if it supports these formats, it may not do a great job tone mapping it. It's more about the TV, not the HDR format.

Edit: I didn't read the article when posting this; I just now read it and I was right. It all comes down to the TV, not the format.

Mediatek has produced many excellent chips and they are now making quality smartphone chips that can compete with the Qualcomm Snapdragon.

Or the player. Sometimes the player does better tone-mapping than the display to which it’s attached. The Panasonic 820 does impressive tone-mapping.

I asked this question several years ago in the original HDR thread but I am still confused. Why can't HDR10 metadata allow for adjustment on a scene by scene basis?

I'd imagine because it can't include the Dynamic Metadata for Color Volume Transform (DMCVT) in the format. They're specific to Dolby, Technicolor, Samsung and Philips.

It's a shame that Dolby Vision titles don't have some form of dynamic metadata for consumers without that tech.

That was just not implemented when the format was created.

LG new C2-G2 series supporta it as well through the A9 Gen 5 chip.

https://www.techradar.com/news/lg-ol...vision-upgrade

It just remains to be seen, whether or not other display manufacturers will support this year or the next. I wouldn't be surprised if Vizio has support next year. They were the first to rekease DV enabled display.

It's α9, not A9!
