Default Trigun - Home Releases Comparison

It's well known by now that the Geneon and Victor releases are the best for the series, so I've decided to do a comparison (it also includes FUNimation's Anime Classics edition and Selecta Visión's release).

Just to note, I resized Selecta Visión's screenshots to 720x480 because 720x576 looks weird.

Comparison #1

[Show spoiler]FUNimation Entertainment

Geneon

Selecta Visión

Victor Entertainment

Comparison #2

[Show spoiler]FUNimation Entertainment

Geneon

Selecta Visión

Victor Entertainment

Comparison #3

[Show spoiler]FUNimation Entertainment

Geneon

Selecta Visión

Victor Entertainment

Conclusion: The Geneon is by far the best of the bunch, with Victor coming in second, Selecta in third (I actually like the "smoothness" of the picture and it's a bit saturated) while FUNimation's in last place. FUNimation's release really does look as bad as people say.

Hope this helps, and that they (in Japan) make a HD Remaster or at least a quality upscale someday.

Wasn't there another difference between the Geneon/Pioneer release and the Remix/tins too? I remember BoA talking about it in detail awhile ago but a lot of the old comparisons are gone now.

Can't remember anything on video quality, but there was the issue with the openings. As I've mentioned elsewhere here, each episode has its own unique opening but Geneon received only a clean version of Episode 1's to plaster the English credits on, and they used that for every episode on the initial release. This mistake was rectified on the Remix tins which were later released as the Remix singles. When FUNimation rescued the series in 2010, they repeated Geneon's mistake from the singles and it got fixed on the 2013 Anime Classics release. Also, FUNimation's release is missing most of the extras from the Geneon DVDs like most of their rescues until 2011.

What's missing. "Character Designs, Mechanical Designs, Weapon Designs, TV Spots, Art Gallery, Original Openings"

Love this show, I stuck with the Geneon DVDs with the art box.

They all look like crap. This show badly needs an HD remaster, and I still can’t believe it doesn’t have one, along with Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040.

That's not the point of it, it's just a comparison between the releases and see which one is the best.

Yeah I do agree they look like crap, even by DVD standards. Shows that were shot on film usually come from a crappy tape master or something else which is why they are so bad in quality.

I really hope one day they will remaster this show from the original source material.

I knew that, but honestly, I think it's a bit moot to determine which one looks the least awful when they all look so terrible. If someone must own this show now, I would just go with the cheapest option, but I'm personally waiting on a proper HD transfer.

How does the UK's MVM release compare to these? at the end of the day that's the easiest one for me to access without importing.

It’s just the old Pioneer discs in PAL format.

Like I said in the other thread, the differences between all these releases are so negligible that you can buy any of them and be happy (happy in comparison). I still have the original Funi first run releases with the foil insert cards from '99/2000, PLUS I bought Paul Champagne's second art box (when he started doing color boxes), and I'm more than happy to keep what I got until something noticeably better comes along.

So, again, I just think if you see any release for sale for a fraction of what another dvd set might sell for, then just go for the cheapest

Indeed they do. Blurry SD anime makes my eyes hurt. Can't even watch it; there's better stuff to view.

It’s especially erroneous since Trigun and BGC Tokyo 2040 are such classics, especially of their era. They’re certainly up there with Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing, and Serial Experiments Lain.

BCG Tokyo 2040 at least looks decent-ish on DVD. I’m currently watching FUNi’s latest reissue, and it’s watchable enough, but I can’t help but wonder how much better it would look with an HD scan.

Am I the only one who thinks it looks fine (at least the Geneon discs)? I mean sure it probably doesn't look as good as it could be, but it looks perfectly fine as it is, at least to me.

After watching it 1st on Adult Swim then the Pioneer DVDs, the Geneon Remix DVDs, the PSP UMD and the Funimation DVD, I always felt it was intentional to look that way because of all the sand the series has.

It looks terrible (dat ringing), but is still "watchable". Things could be worse though, it could be say Pet Shop of Horrors, or Hareluya II Boy (keep your expectations very low for that Blu-ray when it comes out this year).

The Geneon, Spanish, and Japanese DVDs at least look better than the mediocre FUNimation release so that's a good thing even if it ultimately doesn't look great overall (it doesn't, yeah).

I thought people exaggerated saying they looked bad, nope, they actually do.

Isn't a big problem with Trigun is that it isn't popular in Japan? So it would be up to a US company to do their own restoration?

That would likely be the case. So long as the masters still exist, that is.

furthermore, trigun is one of those anime with substandard scan quality on dvd that borderlines VHS territory.

at least fans created a decent version to watch that's on par with other decent dvds' quality. a bit of a shame that the official release has a dbz-like situation but on dvd instead of BDs. haha
