Really? Well that sucks. Monte himself had told me that the Japanese Blu was the best version available. And I'm assuming this is most likely going to be the same transfer if I'd had to bet money on it.

I don't really blame Shout for barely acknowledging it - cult though it is, it has a VERY VERY limited appeal for pretty much anyone younger than mid 30s due to the subject matter, and the fact it's popular in Japan probably says a lot. I know plenty of people who have never seen it that won't even give it a glance due to the cock fighting. But it is a bona fide minor masterpiece and, probably, Hellman's best film in my opinion with a career best performance by Oates.

I'll stick with my Anchor Bay DVD, which is fine.

I mean…he was technically correct since there were no other HD options. And I guess it looked marginally better than DVD for daylight scenes kinda. Anything at night or dark looked liked mud.

This will likely be a crappy old scan, but I love the book and I love the movie, so I will pre-order anyway.

You should still keep it though as the Blu-ray won't include the commentary and the documentary from the dvd.

I don't know if they're consistent, but I've had my items shipped separately in that situation.

They always ship the in stock item(s) immediately.

It arrived Friday for me, and I have watched the first 20 mins or so. I can indeed confirm this is from a crappy old scan.... and I feel I am being kind.

Thanks for the info. As I'm from outside of the US I would have had to pay for an overpriced copy on eBay. Now I know to just stick with my DVD.
