Two days ago I received the new Lionsgate Blu-ray of After Yang and immediately watched it.
Unfortunately I quickly identified issues with the video presentation which sadly weren’t mentioned anywhere before. The first issue is that portions of the film have raised blacks, which are especially noticeable in the black bars during the 2.40:1 moments and also during the other aspect ratios. Often a “bad” shot is followed by a perfectly fine looking shot. Here are some time stamps of when I noticed the raised blacks only in the first five minutes: 02:15-02:29, 02:35-02:42, 03:10-04:00. That’s not all, unfortunately. When the picture opens up to 1.78:1 in selected moments, the entire screen looks as if a grey filter has been put over a really nice looking image underneath. Without spoiling anything, this is immediately noticeable because in these scenes there are many VFX shots with a deep black background and only a couple of light sources in the frame. The same can be seen in the midway conversation between Jake and Yang. There is barely any depth and nuance left in their faces. I’m watching on a LG GX OLED so this probably becomes even more obvious than it does on an LCD TV. I couldn’t help and compare the Blu-ray version to the digital 4K Dolby Vision master on Apple TV / iTunes, which unsurprisingly looks flawless. I finally notified director of photography Benjamin Loeb and he quickly responded and acknowledged the problems. He was extremely kind and thankful for bringing this to his attention. He couldn’t do anything on his part, let alone promise a fix, but forwarded my email to A24 and the film’s producer to see what they can do. Hopefully they respond and pressure Lionsgate to issue a replacement disc. Once I hear anything back, I will let you know. |

Update: the UK distributor is Sky Cinema, who isn’t putting it on their PAL sped up platforms until September. Considering the apparent issues with this release mentioned above hopefully a European label might do a UHD or at least a more accurate BD.

I just received this one and I'm debating if I should initiate a return due to the issues mentioned above. I'm really excited to watch it and it was "only" $13 though. Decisions, decisions...
Update for those of you that have been waiting with bated breath: I returned my copy. I'll keep an eye out for another release. Last edited by willieconway; 07-14-2022 at 10:51 PM. Reason: Breaking news |

I've checked the Amazon.fr customer reviews and no one seems to have noticed anything. Since the actual master of the film is fine and presented as such on Apple TV (I assume other digital retailers as well), you might have a good chance with the French disc. I don't have it myself though.
By the way, I have never heard anything back from either the DP or anybody he supposedly made aware of the issue. ![]() |

Did anyone end up ordering the French Blu-ray? If so, how is the transfer and are the subtitles forced? Thanks.

I'm probably not the best person to judge this but I can't say I notice anything wrong with the scenes from the timestamps posted earlier. Edit2: Updated impression after watching the full movie on my TV: I don't know if it's particularly raised blacks but in some scenes (like those mentioned with heavy VFX presented in 16:9), I can see some artifacting in the dark spaces. I don't have an OLED so maybe they are indeed the same and I'm just not seeing it in the other spots on my basic LCD. However, a note about the included extra Region-B disc of Columbus: there are none of the extras (commentary, making of, etc), no EN subs and the French subs are hardcoded for some reason (After Yang's subs are not hardcoded---EDIT: WAIT, CORRECTION!! - they are not hardcoded into the file but they are forced if you're watching the actual disc as it blocks my remote control buttons from switching audio and turning subs off and you have to select which "version" you want to watch from the main menu with the original EN version forcing subs and the French dub turning them off. But if I watch the mkv I ripped earlier, I can still freely turn off the FR subs). So I would recommend this only if you intend to rip the disc or don't mind the FR subs being there. This is the first time I'm encountering a disc that does this, wow. How annoying. Last edited by defmedia; 04-15-2023 at 09:22 AM. Reason: updated impressions |
