So I've been search for an AV Receiver. Just about to demo a couple. I get to my local Sound & Vison store. The salesman tells me that the receiver I have been looking at the Pio Elite's SC05, Denon 2309/10, Denon 1909/10. Onkyo 607. Dont do this "HDMI Scaling". He goes on to tell me that they will upscale thru the analog signal. They will upconvert to a 1080p signal, but not thru the HDMI. He says if I want to get a receiver that does the upscaling thru HDMI I need to get an Intergra 8.9, Denon 5309, or a Yamaha 3900.
THE PRICE JUST JUMP $1,000!!!!!!!!! My price range is $750-$1,000. Now I have to spend $1,800 to get what I want. He explained if I stayed at my price point that I would have to run a coax cable to get audio. I am extremely dissapointed. I'm back to the drawing board. He did say the Integra 8.9 was the best bang for the buck at $1,800 because it has 65 amp PLEASE HELP!!! Is this saleman lying to me???? or Do I really have to go up $1,000 to get an AV Receiver that will upconvert an HDMI signal to 1080p???? |

Video processors in AV receivers are not very good. If you want GOOD video scaling your better off getting a receiver without it and adding a DVDO Edge stand alone video processor. The Edge will beat most if not all receivers out there and most DVD & blu-ray players with up-conversion. http://www.anchorbaytech.com/dvdo_edge/

He said that you would have to run a coax cable to get audio from a SC05? That's not right.

your tv will scale everything to 1080p through hdmi anyway, thats why you dont see this option in to many receivers. As for needing to connect audio through coax at that price range, thats bull you can find 200 dollar receives that will run audio through hdmi. Get the pioneer sc05 at best buy for 999 buck (you can get them to go lower) and be done with it.

That salesman is trying to take you for a ride. I'd recommend the SC05 too, but don't buy it from that guy.

Basically, the receivers you're looking at in your price range, will take an analog signal (480i, 480p, etc.) and upconvert it to 1080p via HDMI. Whatever that guy is telling you is bull****. As for the audio, what everyone here is saying is right. You wouldn't need digital coax for sound. Those receivers will do audio through HDMI.

In essence, he told me if I was watching a standard def. signal say like MTV. I need to run component and the Digital optical. I thought it was bull. He even brought out a chart with HDMI pass thru saying that the HDMI 720p signal will never convert up to a 1080p signal by using the HDMI. He went on to tell me if I wanted a blu-ray type picture I would be wasting my money on the receivers that I was looking at. So he's just full of it, right? |

What I want the AV Receiver to do is to convert my standard 480i picture into a 1080p picture via using the HDMI cable. He says the Pio SC 05 won't do it. He tells me that the Pio will only do it thru component. The Salesaman tells me I need this Integra 8.9, 8.8, or 9.9 with this Silicon Optix Reon HQV video processing chip (HQV Reon-VX Chip for High-Performance Video Processing) otherwise I'm can't get a Blu-ray type picture thru my satelite provider. I want a Blu-ray type picture no matter what I'm watching (playstation 3/blu ray, DVD, Standard Def, High Def, 480i, 480p, 720p,1080i)... I need the receiver to take what ever I'm running to it & make it a Blu ray type (HD picture). |

So what is wrong with using component and upscaling that? It would be the same info if it was running through HDMI.
Just to be clear, if you have a 480 source you want to upscale, it probably doesn't have HDMI anyway, the Pioneer will do what you want it to. Connect via component or analog and it will upscale it and sent it out via HDMI. Edit again> I don't think the salesman was upselling you I think what you asked him for and what you are looking for are 2 different things. Last edited by CasualKiller; 06-14-2009 at 11:56 PM. |

On the 480 source. The reason why I want it to upconvert is I don't want to be able to tell the difference btwn ESPNHD and ESPN(standard def). I want the receiver to just do it all!! |

![]() Edit> well you can ignore the frowny face, you can always purchase your Pioneer and the scaler that Odd posted, appears to be a solid unit.... Last edited by CasualKiller; 06-15-2009 at 12:15 AM. |

You're asking for the impossible. No magic in this world will make a 480i SD picture look as good as a 1080p or 1080i image. Sorry.
