Default Everything you ever wanted to know about Blu-ray.... but were too afraid to ask :o

Ok, so I am sure there are people here who would like to ask a few questions but are afraid that the questions they have are "silly" or they might think "people will think I am stupid if I ask this.." or "it's probably too obvious so I wont ask..." Well, dont be afraid anymore! This is the thread that will let you ask anything about blu-ray but were too afraid to ask It is for those little questions that you have where you are thinking "Ok, this is probably really obvious but.." Want to know some definitions? The explanation behind some abbreviations or acronyms? Just ask! No question is too ridiculous!

I know there are loads of threads here that will definately give you the answers, but all this thread should just provide one or two liners to answer your question in the simplest, quickest way.

Dont be shy, no matter how stupid or trivial you might think the question is, just ask!!

I'll start.. what the hell is "noise" in a film?? I read reviews etc and people SEE "noise" ?????

Also, in the film The Dark Knight, some scenes were shot in IMAX.. eh.. what is that?? What scenes? And what makes them stand out from the rest?? The whole film looked great to me!

Good thread idea..

AFIAK noise is like little black flickering shapes in the film, if you watch old MGM intro's you'll see it.
I could be completely wrong.. but thats what I took it as.

its very fast on a ps3 so I guess other players take longer due to weaker processors? What it is doing for the 2 or 3 mins during loading though, I have no idea..

Why don't all Blu-ray discs take the same time to load? More specifically: why can't manufacturing companies (studios?) make these times more consistent? Is there a certain specification (or list thereof) that manufacturing companies/studios must meet?

That's an easy one: it's because its data is reaad and written by a blue laser.
Quote:
The name Blu-ray Disc derives from the blue-violet laser used to read the disc. While a standard DVD uses a 650 nanometre red laser, Blu-ray uses a shorter wavelength, a 405 nm blue-violet laser, and allows for almost six times more data storage than on a DVD.

It's a joke from a South Park episode called Gnomes (season 2). A bunch of gnomes would steal underpants and when confronted with their diabolical scheme they had a chart which read as follows:

Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ?
Phase 3: Profit

It has to do with the menu's and their authoring. All those great graphics we get for menus, as well as the menu's themselves (interactivity) take time to load up. There are a couple different ways to do it.

BD Java has improved drastically since the beginning and now there are a lot of shortcuts that help tighten up the load times.

edit: the reason they aren't consistent is because each movie is offering a different slate of material (up to and including BD-Live). I think it's a good idea to have a 'generic template' but I mostly just watch the movie itself.

I've never noticed certain BD's taking longer than other with the exception of when they load BD-Live content when you start then up, i.e. Iron Man.
