Upgrade? HD Audio? - Blu-ray Forum

I'm relatively new to the home theater experience, I'm 19 and just getting started. I do have a surround sound system but it is just a $200 HTiB.

It has an optical in and I have a switch which goes between all my components. I realize this is pretty laughable to most of you folks.

What am I missing with DTS-HD and True HD? Any 5.1 HTiB with HD audio?

No man its not laughable! I'm only 19 myself, and got HD Audio just 4 months ago! You will be addicted though! I have upgraded EVERYTHING in my bedroom within the last 1½ years

Before that I just had a tube telly and a stereo setup!

Have fun with your new hobby if you decide to upgrade! The sony system seems nice

You are missing out on the HD audio that is part of Blu-Ray discs. Read up on this lossless audio format and how it is different from the old lossy formats. Yes, there are some receivers that decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS MasterAudio and are 5.1 only systems. But ANY 7.1 system can be set up as a 5.1 system if desired. Please do your research before you purchase. It would be awful to put a lot of money into a system only to find out that it doesn't do what you wanted it to.....but hundreds of people do just that every day and then wonder " WHY ??? ".
