Will provide more details when I get them, but this is creating buzz in the Cannes market. It’s a musical comedy about an El Chapo-type fugitive who can’t get away from the law so has a sex change. Ten years later she misses her children immensely and returns as their aunt. LPI is financing, and Wild Bunch will be selling international along with CAA Media Finance, which is also selling North American territories. Sofia is an Argentinian trans actress who has emerged as one to watch. source

Today we went to see this film at the cinema.
Quite a fresh take on the genre of mobster movies. First because a transsexual has one of the main roles, secondly because it's partially a musical. We don't regret having seen it.

By the way, there's an error in the quote in the first post here. This film is definitely not a comedy. Maybe it's because of a translation error, the French term for a musical is always "comédie musicale", doesn't matter if it's a comedy or a drama.

Strange. Although I really like Emilia Pérez, Le comte de Monte-Cristo would've been the more logic choice in my eyes, alone for the spoken language in it.
The French are usually quite proud of their language.

But Perez already won awards at Cannes, is made by a well-known director, has a couple of American stars in the cast and is touted as a strong Best Picture contender.

The choice was a no-brainer.

If anyone wants a literary analysis of Emilia Perez's ending, themes, and meaning

Review wise, I liked the performances. But I found the commentary a bit...superficial...to put it kindly. I get why people from the communities involved are pretty annoyed with the movie. It means well, but it's a bit...obtuse.
