In the meantime, I'm waiting for the original to be remastered and released in 4K. Dream on!

I was seriously thinking how this needed a sequel like 3 days ago, if only McKean and company weren’t too old. Guess they aren’t lol.

that was my first thought, then I remembered all the 80's bands still touring today... along with the 70's and even 60's!

They've all been plenty successful since then, it's not like they need to do it. I'm skeptical about the outcome too, but they're more than likely just doing it for the fun of it.

I've met Duke Fame (played by Paul Shortino: Rough Cutt, Quiet Riot, King Kobra, Raiding the Rock Vault etc) many times in Vegas. Hope he returns.

I'm pretty sure that them being so old will be a major part of the plot line and comedy.

Some of the 80's bands are about to be 80. Sammy Hagar subbed in for the Foo Fighters at the Memphis music fest a few weeks ago, dude's 74 already.

Huge no to this. The original is a classic and was the 2nd best movie of 1984 (after Ghostbusters, of course). But Rob Reiner hasn't been the same since he decided to destroy his perfect streak with North.

The Cannes Market package for the sequel to the famed rock mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap is a bigger deal than I originally reported when Deadline broke the story. I’ve learned that CAA Media Finance will be selling rights to the original film as well. The filmmakers hope that both films will be available on the same platform/distributor.

The rights recently came back to them, and Spinal Tap only has been selectively available for purchase.

We need a home video release that repackages all of the Criterion special features.

I hope Garth is playing Chris Gaines, we missed out on The Lamb being made over a decade ago.

Yeah I'm not one to get excited over reboots/sequels/requels/whatever as not many ever live up to the original. But this one, if done right, could be quite fun! I'm hoping they pull the old man schtick with them aging and trying to get a younger audience on things like tiktok (shit I must be getting old I actually just had to look up how it's spelled since I've never seen anything on it before haha) etc and trying to do reunion tours coming out of retirement etc. Or have them still out playing small dive bars every night to like 4 people, but doing something really dumb and having someone catch it on video and going viral then getting famous again. There's so much they could do with this!!

And yes I'm really hoping this means the original, and this one, will get 4ks out of this!!

As a fan of Spinal Tap the movie, about the mockumentary rock metal band on tour and interviews, I bought the new 2009 CD Spinal Tap with the bonus DVD of their latest update back then. I have to say, the improvisation is such a hit or miss thing, and unfortunately, it was missing in the latest CD from Spinal Tap, where almost all of the jokes/humor missed the mark. It almost seemed a bit forced. I'll watch it again and maybe have a different view 15+ years later or whenever that was, but that was my impression watching it back then. I think it was 30 minutes at most. And it was just interviews, no scenarios like in the first film.

The sequel film, where they are on tour singing, is just that. A tour rock metal band concert. It was entertaining for the music, but not funny IMO.

Rank:
This is Spinal Tap
Best in Show
A Mighty Wind
Waiting for Guffman
For Your Consideration
Return of Spinal Tap (concert film)
Back from the Dead Spinal Tap (2009 short film DVD)
Mascots (2016 was their last film as a team of improvisors)

The band Spinal Tap are all about instant gratification. “Tonight I’m gonna rock you tonight,” they howled in their song ‘Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight‘. “Gimme some money,” they crooned in their anthem ‘Gimme Some Money’. Whether it’s canapes, big bottoms, or unintentionally tiny models of Stonehenge, they want it now.

When it’s come to their new adventure, however, we’ve had to wait a while. Over 40 years, in fact. It’s been that long since 1984’s This Is Spinal Tap, still arguably the funniest spoof documentary of all time, and certainly the loudest. While they've reassembled for live gigs (plus an episode of The Simpsons) in the intervening years, many feared we'd never see them rock again on the big screen. Many feared we’d never see them rock again. But in 2025, finally, we’ll discover what has become of the iconic trio of hair-metal maniacs — David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) — and Empire was fortunate enough to bag the first ever interview for the film.

Here, director Rob Reiner, who will also be returning in front of the camera as beleaguered documentarian Marty DiBergi, gives us intel on what to expect. So with no further ado, to borrow a DiBergi catchphrase, let’s boogie…

What was the idea that finally unlocked Spinal Tap II?

It came from a very real place, which was that Tony Hendra, the actor who played Ian Faith, their manager in the movie, passed away. And in reality the guys — Harry, Chris and Michael — hadn’t played together as Tap for 15 years. So we thought, “Maybe there’s something in that, a reunion concert.” And we came up with this idea that Ian Faith had willed his daughter, Hope, this contract that called for one more performance. She thinks initially, “Well, this is not really worth anything, because the band hasn’t played together.” But then some big music star, while screwing around at a sound check, is filmed on an iPhone singing a Tap song, and it goes wild on social media. All of a sudden, the contract is worth something.

You’re reprising the role of documentary-maker Marty DiBergi, the guy behind the likes of Kramer Vs Kramer Vs Godzilla.

He was hoping that the first film would lead to some kind of career in Hollywood, but it didn’t work out. I’ve written a book for Simon & Schuster and I explain what happened to Marty. You know, he couldn’t even get commercials anymore. So he’s been teaching as an assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts. But when he hears that they are going to do another concert, he contacts them and asks if he can document it.
