The magnificent Ian Holm (The Homecoming, Alien) is renowned children’s author Lewis Carroll in this poignant fantasy-drama set in 1930s New York and populated by the fabulous special-effects creatures of Muppet master Jim Henson. To help celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s birth, the real-life Alice in Wonderland—80-year-old Alice Hargreaves (Coral Browne, The Killing of Sister George)—is baffled by her enormous public popularity. As she comes to terms with America’s “Alice Mania,” she returns in her thoughts and dreams to her idyllic childhood, in the England of the mid-1800s. In a wondrous blend of fantasy and reality, she confronts the unsettling memories of her past—and the strangely repressed Reverend Dodgson (a.k.a. Lewis Carroll), whose powerful affection for Alice surfaced in his writing to create one of the world’s most beloved literary classics. Scripted by Dennis Potter (Gorky Park) and co-starring Peter Gallagher (Summer Lovers), Dreamchild is a delightfully unique and inspiring film for all ages.

I hoped for a 4K/2K restoration and for more extras and interviews, but anyway it's better having a high definition restoration, instead having that Out of Print DVD by MGM. If and I hoped for Shout Factory or Arrow Video to have a release, Kino it's satisfying too.

Holy crap, just discovered this watching Deals. I still have the barely-watchable "manufactured on order" DVD-R of this from Amazon. One of my favorite, puzzling films with superb performances by ian Holm and Coral Browne. Automatic order for me, even without the usual required check of bluray.com review first.

It's a wonderful film. So much so, that part of me wishes Jim Henson's Creature Shop had worked on a direct adaptation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The creatures aren't reproductions of John Tenniel's illustrations, but original inspirations from Lewis Carroll's story. But, if that had happened, we (maybe) wouldn't have Dreamchild.

Pauline Kael loved this one, at a time (the last decade of her career as a critic) when she increasingly didn't enjoy many movies she reviewed.

Lucked out and bought this during a Christmas season sale on Kino Lorber's site, along with some other "wanted" titles. Though this is by far probably the best home media release in a while, the BD shows the limitations of the source print. Very filmy with grain throughout, and some clumsy audio mixing (in the source). Fans of this underrated gem like me won't be disappointed though. It continues to entertain and provoke unease.

One benefit of a new HD master: you can better appreciate Coral Browne and Ian Holm's performances, as well has the Henson Studio's creations. Blind buy probably not advised, but fan's won't be disappointed in the Kino BD.

I was underwhelmed by the Dreamchild when it was first released in cinemas.

However, the praise heaped upon the film as the years have gone by encouraged me to give the film another go so I purchased the film and was so glad I did.

Really appreciated it so much more on the second viewing. A very delicate, eerie film and Carole Brownie is magnificent in it.
