Join Sir David Attenborough and step into a hidden world full of remarkable behaviour, emotional stories and surprising heroes. Using specialist cameras, this spectacular series allows us to travel beyond the power of the human eye, to look closer at the interconnected world of plants, showcasing over two decades of new discoveries. From deserts, tropical jungles and underwater worlds to seasonal lands and our own urban environment, each episode introduces a set of plants, reveals the battles they face, and the ingenious ways they’ve found to survive.

Has anyone bought the UK version of this? I got the Australian version a few weeks ago, and though it is narrated by David it doesn't actually have him IN the show, it's just his voice. All of the promotional material like the trailer and short clips on YouTube show him actually presenting not just narrating (like the moment with him and the bat etc.).
Just wondering whether I need to order the UK version instead so I can view his beautiful blue shirts in crisp 4K.

That's really odd. I don't have the UK discs but I did watch the series as it was being broadcast and he appears throughout quite a bit.
Did you check the runtime of each episode and compare it to it's imdb runtime? I'd imagine they're shorter if they cut out those segments.

Edit: I did a lite bit of digging and you're right. The 1080p discs (technically 1080i since they're 25fps) have the full episodes running between 57-59 min, while the 4K discs (at 23.976) have edited down versions with runtimes of about 54-55 min, when they should be longer due to the framerate.

The "on location" footage was not shot in 4K apparently and is available separately on disc 2 in HD.

I don't get it—they couldn't have upscaled those parts?

I hope the US version isn't like that. Is the UK?

They never leave those segments on the 4k disc, only the Blu-ray. Why those shorts aren't shot in 4k too remains a mystery only the BBC can answer.

The UK and AU 4K discs are identical so it's very likely the US will be the same.

The BDs will be different tho, as the UK ones are 25fps. The US BDs will probably be direct downconverts of the 23.976 4k discs so it's possible not even those will have the "on location" stuff integrated into the episodes and instead be presented as extras.

This person wins the statement of the posts!
If it's narrated by Sir David Attenborough, 'nuff said - we own it.

I have it. It's just his voice in the episodes, but I haven't watched the bonus yet.

And that may be true, but it matters to me whether something I'm watching takes an hour or a day or week, lol.

This was pretty good but the other episodes had stronger picture. Might partly be because of the topic. Now I only have the behind the scenes episode to watch but I might not do it for a few weeks.

The segments that are only on the Blu-rays are the little 10-minute location shoots from the camera crews that appear at the end of each episode during the UK broadcast and on Blu-ray. Because these are filmed by the crew themselves over the duration of the shoot, they are probably in a variety of frame rates and likely not even in 4K resolution to start with, which is why they're not included as part of the 4K version of the program and why the running times of the episodes are different across Blu-ray and 4K UHD. My understanding is that these segments, which I believe are titled "The Green Planet: On Location", are combined into an extra in 1080 resolution on one of the UHD discs.

This is different from the footage in the episodes, including footage of Attenborough on location. All of the episode footage--including footage of Atteborough--should be included in the version of the program on the 4K UHD disc. If someone has a version that doesn't include the footage of Attenborough, then it must be an edited version, or defective.

Pretty sure there's no footage of Attenborough in the 4K episodes. There for sure wasn't in the humans episode I just watched yesterday. Pretty sure there wasn't any in the other episodes either.

That is exceedingly strange, because he is definitely in the UK Blu-ray episodes. I can't swear to when and how often, but if, for example, the 4K UHD is lacking this scene of Attenborough with the cactus, then the 4K UHD presentation is either edited or defective:

Wow - this IS strange. I just watched the UK 4K a few weeks ago and do NOT remember seeing this (I will admit my memory is far from perfect, but...)

But why on earth would they have edited it?

Not in the bonus (on location) either though he narrates the whole thing. So no footage of Attenborough on the UHDs.

The Cholla part is edited completely differently and no he's not in it. The content is the same including the animation in the middle but there's different dialog and footage. The stuff with the glove is not there at all.

I don't see any reason to think it's defective, it's just edited differently.

Fast forwarded through the same episode on the included blu-ray, and there's plenty of footage of Attenborough, including the glove scene. You need a player that can convert 50 Hz if you're in NA though. The on location is at the end of the episode too.

Kind of disappointing, I wouldn't have minded seeing that stuff upscaled.

I just assumed he was too old to go on location anymore, but glad to see that's not the case.

Thanks for checking/confirming.

I really don't like that they took him out, I'm old enough that I need my 'see, he's 95 and still out there having adventures!' fix

In all seriousness -- I think his warm, human physical presence always adds a a lot, seems a foolish choice to remove it...
