The Thing teaches that no one can fully be trusted, never knowing if they might be The Thing underneath, ready to unleash the monster and attack at any moment.

The original real effects were nicely done for the 80s. Gory horror film and one of a kind. 40 years, that went fast.

Cool that your parents let you see a horror film, The Thing, in theaters. I only got to rent horror films most of the time as a kid so that's when I finally saw this classic.

Funniest scene in the film for me is when they are doing the blood test with the wire. Then at the end Garry says "I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of my life TIED TO THIS F****ING COUCH!!"

As good as the monster FX are really I think the greatest strenght of the film is as an excellent thriller.

Its really well shot and manages to have a large cast of characters all of whome have their own believable personalities and act in a realistic fashion.

Watching the prequels recently what struck me wasnt the FX being CGI, honestly I think they look pretty good but rather than its just a generic monster movie and the characters are merely fodder for the beast.

Correct. First movie was fabulous. An all time great. Nothing more associated with the "franchise", if you can even call it that has any value at all.

The only effects scene that doesn’t hold up well in the original is when Windows is being thrashed in the blood test scene. The fake legs whipping about are quite bad. But, it’s not a huge deal.

I mean for a modern horror franchise film I don't think the prequel is "bad" at all but I think it just shows you that the strenghts of the original were more than just being a gore film.

I love pairing The Thing with Assault On Precinct 13 (also a Hawks tribute/homage). If someone was desperate to make another John Carpenter remake they could do worse than combining those two ideas. A helpless person or persons takes refuge in a soon to be besieged and cut off police station. Midway through the movie it turns out that the real threat is inside with them and our sympathies and hope for salvation switch over to those besieging the station.

Title : The Thing Vs Precinct 13
