Default Box-Office Showdown (5/27-5/29) How high will Top Gun: Maverick soar?

OK, the sequel you've been waiting 36 years for is finally here - how high do you think it will soar?

Top Gun: Maverick almost has the entire weekend to itself, opening only against Disney's Bob's Burgers (apparently, the last title they will release under the Fox banner until Avatar 2 in December)

For bonus points, also guess how much Bob's Burgers will make!

Hopefully it will make a fortune, this will be my first trip back to movie theatres since The Invisible Man in January 2020.

You guys are way underestimating this. This movie is almost totally sold out at all shows in my area, even the early shows. I’m gonna guess 160 million.

Domestic, I bet this movie gets to like 800 million worldwide by the end of its run.

LOL! No chance, whatsoever. It won't even open to half that, domestically.

You don’t think this can make 400 million domestic and 800 million worldwide? I think it really has a shot, I’m serious. I’ve been wrong on box office before though, so I’ll wait and see.

It looks domestic heavy than worldwide.

The seating charts at Harkins Cerritos and AMC Orange are surprisingly sparse for Thursday and most of Friday, with the exception of the 6-7 PM premium theater showings.

It might just be this area though. Tom Cruise is his own franchise and is the king of the walkup ticket buyers.

$83 million. Perhaps I have a dark heart.

I amended my comment when I realized how it would come across. I meant it won't make half your domestic opening weekend prediction. But no, it's not making 400m, domestically. 800m worldwide might be doable, but I'm skeptical about that as well.

I just don't think Top Gun is anywhere near as popular an IP as the M:I franchise, and his highest grossing movie ever is Fallout at 787m.

Just realized that it's a holiday weekend, so it might push 100m opening at most but I doubt it.

That was my last movie before COVID as well (had tickets to A Quiet Place 2 before it go delayed).

This is getting me back into the theaters as well. And as far as I can tell with sold seats at all showing times, a lot of other people too.

$115 million, though I wouldn't be suprised if it goes higher. Nostalgia, rave reviews, the holiday weekend, and the last big movie being 3 weeks old, will make for a winning combo.
