Hi guys, I heard a demo from the Bose lifestyle entertainment system, I was really imressed of the sound ( a concert was played on dvd). It was like I was at the concert, even heard the people behind me sing along. Now I read these is capable with using refecting speakers, now I wonder can I just buy these speakers and play with my Yamaha receiver or will this only work with the the Bose lifestyle entertainment system?
Anyone has experience with this? Grtz |

Many years ago I was really into Hi-Fi and had a pair of the Bose 901 speakers. They were designed to utilize the reflecting sound concept. Took gobs of power to make them perform to their full potential but sounded great. The good old days of turntables and vinyl grooves.

Many (but not all) Bose speakers have proprietary connectors, meaning you will only be able to use them with a Bose system. Take a look at the speakers to see if they have the standard 5-way binding posts or spring clip connectors. If they do you should be fine using them with any normal receiver. If they don't then you'd have to buy a Bose "receiver".
Bose doesn't have any secret technology. Considering their usually inflated prices you shouldn't have any trouble finding equally impressive speakers for much less or much better speakers for the same price. |

doing some research on bose products will save you a ton of money...if they were properly priced, bose products would be a fantastic setup and solution for many...if you notice, bose has their own setup in any place you enter and it is a self contained area usually not next to other systems..there is a reason for this...mainly so you cant compare their system to a similar priced setup and hear what you should be getting for your money

look into the energy take classic or energy rc micro system if you need the small size..you've already got the receiver.

I suggest you listen to the speakers before you buy (if possible) and don't just go by what you read on forums. Sometimes the advice is helpful and sometimes a product is bashed such as Bose or JL Audio. Are there better sounding speakers out there? Yep, but if you heard them and like them, then I would go that route. Shop around compare prices, check eBay. Then again, some may say my opinion is swayed, lol. I do have Bose 201V Fronts and I have also had Klipsch speakers and I like them both. Bought Bose this time because I got a great deal on them (eBay).

now, in regards to purchasing that would envelop you, you can utilize either bipoles or dipole speakers as your rears to get that effect. bipole/dipole sticky there are also a number of manufacturers as well of these surround speakers, and can be found in the same section. as always, audition audition audition. the internet can only get you so far. |

I'm not sure how you want to use the speakers, but a direct-reflecting speaker is not ideal speaker except for general background music. When you look at their diagrams and read the text, you'll see the design is in direct opposition to good imaging. Bouncing the sound off walls slurs the image. You have direct sound coming from the speaker, and depending upon which Bose you have, up to eight (901) speakers sending delayed indirect sound. It's like the sound having multiple echos.
Also Bose doesn't use the best drivers. How many other speaker companies are still using paper tweeters? The only place I still see them used is in cheap rack or HTIB systems. For good highs you need a tweeter material which is very light and rigid, paper just doesn't cut it. Also if you check their specs (if you can find them in print) the freq response is given with a tolerance of +-10db where most other speaker companies provide it in +- 3db or less. With a tolerance of +- 10db this allows a 20db deviation across the freq range. It's too bad Bose hasn't put as much into their engineering as they do advertising. Instead try speakers from PSB, Paradigm, or if budget is a concern, the Enerys mentioned earlier. Don't be afraid to purchase used. I've baught many speakers off ebay. As long as you know what you're looking at and ask questions about condition, you shouldn't have any need for concern. Good Luck. |
