Sony Turning PlayStation’s ‘Gran Turismo’ Into Movie; Neill Blomkamp Eyed To Direct



EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, whose most recent video-game-to-film collaboration Uncharted grossed more than $400 million in global box office earlier this year, are getting behind the wheel for a movie adaptation of the iconic driving game Gran Turismo.

The project is in very early development, we hear. Neill Blomkamp is being eyed to direct.

The plot of the film project is being kept under wraps, but the news comes as reports surfaced today that a TV adaptation of the racing game is also being developed and aimed at a streaming service.

There is a rich history behind the game, created by Polyphony and Kazunori Yamauchi in 1997 and hailed as one of the most authentic driving simulator in its class for its focus on precise graphics, driving physics and attention to detail of its cars, which players would build and race. The series has sold more than 85 million copies, with the most recent edition, Gran Turismo 7, hitting shelves in March for PS 4 and PS 5.

Uncharted, starring Tom Holland on the video game character Nathan Drake, was directed by Ruben Fleischer and released February 10. It opened to $44 million and legged out to $400.8 million worldwide.

Gran Turismo reps one of several game-centered projects in the pipeline for corporate siblings Sony and PlayStation Prods. In April, Takashi Doscher was set to pen the adaptation of the action adventure game Ghost of Tsushima, which has seen more than 8 million copies sold since its July 2020 debut.

Sony Pictures TV and PlayStation are also developing the TV series The Last of Us for HBO, with Craig Mazin attached to write and executive produce; and Twisted Metal at Peacock with Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Thomas Haden Church and Neve Campbell toplining the action comedy adaptation based on an original take by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

I know Blomkamp needs a hit, but he should be doing something cooler than this. He's got some pretty cool looking shorts on his youtube channel. Some of those would be cool movies.

Amazed that Blomkamp still has this kind of pull after the failures of Demonic and (the underrated) Chappie.

This isn't as surprising as one would think. Blomkamp has an obsession with cars.

I do agree that I feel this is a waste of his talent and skill, though. I wonder if he's doing this for Sony in agreement with funding something more original of his afterwards. There's also the 'District 9' sequel that's been in the cards for a while now -- which is also with Sony.

Glad to see Blomkamp still directing. People were saying his career was done after his last movie.

I don't really think this is evidence of Blomkamp having "pull" still. It feels more like an a "director for hire" job. Everything Blomkamp has done before has been sci fi/horror related. Feels like he got himself hired for this job, a well known video game property, so he can get himself a hit.

Honestly, I think GT might work as an adaptation in that there's so little to adapt that they could do basically anything, and as long as it involves car racing it'll probably fit just fine. That being said, Blomkamp's films tend to have a grungy, somewhat counter-cultural feel to them, often focusing on downtrodden people in impoverished places, and the one thing I do strongly associate with GT is an aesthetic focus on being "clean," or maybe "sterile" is more appropriate. So Blomkamp is still an odd pick for this, but this really is a director-for-hire thing so I assume he's shifting focus away from that stuff.

Gran Turismo the movie. Hopefully it includes the top 500 racing cars available.
I bet the film will start the hero off with a used Honda Civic or Toyota, and eventually, after about 20 wins, they'll upgrade their car to something a bit faster. GT2 will then feature faster cars earned, until GT3, when the super sports cars are finally attained and raced. Hopefully the movie won't require a 24/7 online connection to watch it.

Need for Speed the movie was generally entertaining for the car chases and races despite the flaws of the story, starring Aaron Paul.

Personally I would have rather have seen Blomkamp make a Twisted Metal film than GT. It feels more up his alley.
