Default The Ninth Configuration (1980) - Scream Factory

https://www.shoutfactory.com/product...roduct_id=7832

Quote:
Offbeat, visionary and challenging ... Blatty has a good sense of the absurd ... making sure things are never quite what they seem to be." – TV Guide

William Peter Blatty (The Exorcist, The Exorcist III) brings you a psychologically challenging exploration of faith, suffering, and madness with the cult favorite The Ninth Configuration.

In the final days of the Vietnam War, a remote castle in the Pacific Northwest serves as a mental hospital for troubled soldiers scarred by their experiences. Isolated and all-but-forgotten, the inmates are running the asylum ... until Colonel Kane (Stacy Keach) arrives to take over their treatment. Taking a special interest in one of his new patients – former astronaut Billy Cutshaw (Scott Wilson) who inexplicably aborted his mission to the Moon during its final countdown – Kane seeks answers to the mysteries of the breakdown. But as his time in the castle goes on, the riddles in Kane's own mind reveal themselves in shocking and violent ways.

Winner of both the Golden Globe and Saturn Award for Best Writing, The Ninth Configuration falls in between The Exorcist and The Exorcist III as the second installment of Blatty's "Trilogy Of Faith." By turns hilarious, surreal, and darkly powerful, it's a truly unforgettable cinematic experience.

I want this pretty bad because I’ve heard it’s a fantastic film but alas, $36 shipped just doesn’t work for me. That’s a tough barrier to overcome right now.

Ordered. That 1,500 is going to go quickly and this isn't one I want to miss out on.

Definitely interested in this one, but not sure about a blind-buy. I do see it's streaming on Tubi (albeit in so-so quality) so I'll probably see it there, and then decide. I do think this one will be a pretty strong and fast seller though, and I'm a little surprised they didn't just do a wide release of it.

I watched this when it was on Criterion Channel a while back as I was curious it being being directed by Blatty and featuring Jason Miller. I found it to be a very strong and original film. Good to see it get an updated treatment from Shout. Will consider a purchase.

Blind buy for me. I love The Exorcist and I'm a fan of Exorcist III.

The IMDb mentions a 140 minute version, which seems to be the source for a lot of people referencing it in passing. Does anybody have any details about this? I can understand that they forced him to shorten it to try and make it more commercial, but his "director's cut" is still under two hours, I have a hard time believing the studio would have any reason to add in 20 more minutes. Is this just people adding the deleted scenes from the DVD into the cut or was there actually a 140 minute version released somewhere?

It already had a blu-ray, and not a bad one. So this is for either the people who are big enough fans to automatically upgrade and for people who are not big enough fans to know it already had a release (or people who only saw it on streaming and fell in love with it).

I'm really torn, I think it's a cool movie, but I'm not sure I'd automatically upgrade to the Shout disc, I'd rather wait for reviews, but it will likely sell out before we get any reviews.

Such an odd film, but I do love it. Plays a lot like an Altman film, with various people always muttering something in the background - I catch something different every time. Keach is phenomenal, but so is Scott Wilson. Definitely not for the masses, but looks like I'm buying it again.

Shout's new exclusive release has a run time of 118 minutes, according to their website.

Yes, I know how long the director's cut is, my question is whether anybody has any information to explain the claim that there was a 140 minute version of the film.

I’ve done searches on the 140 minute version in the past, and have never been able to find out what it supposedly entailed. The Deleted Scenes bring it closer to that, but not that full length. The other shorter cuts have their differences documented. I wonder if that was a workprint running time.

Blatty futzed around with it a lot over the years. Shout’s release seems to be the same 118 minute “final Blatty-approved” version we got on past DVD and Blu Ray releases.

Hell with it - ordered. Just blew way too much at Vinegar Syndrome’s sale - what’s another $30 for a better looking and more special feature-heavy version of a movie I love.
