Default Curse of the Pink Panther (1983)

Curse of the Pink Panther (1983) was released by Kino Lorber on Blu-Ray on Jun 27, 2017 Starring Ted Wass, as inept American detective Clifton Sleigh!

Although Curse of the Pink Panther was a box office failure I always believed Ted Wass was great as Clifton Sleigh, he didn't try to be Peter Sellers, he created his own bumbling character and I would have loved to see Clifton Sleigh in at least 2 more Pink Panther films but the studio pulled the plug and we will never know if Clifton Sleigh could have eventually won over audiences.

If you have never seen this film I highly suggest giving it a try!

When I first saw this I went in with VERY low expectations and it was surprisingly enjoyable, certainly more so than the ghoulish Trail. It's also much better than the later Son.

Still, it pales in comparison to the Sellers films and seeing as Wass bombed out as the lead, United Artists really should have taken Dudley Moore up on his offer to make a standalone appearance for Romance and ended the series.

The best part of the movie is the cameo by "Turk Thrust II" at the end.

It's impossible to compare anyone to Peter Sellers, he was a comic genius but as a new lead in a Pink Panther film I think Wass did a great job, we all just wanted Sellers and that was never gonna happen. It's a shame.

Normally CURSE would be the worst of any comedy series, but luckily for it TRAIL (correctly deemed ghouslish) and SON exist.

The only bit I can recall laughing at is this:

And I've never found Leslie Ash attractive.

I absolutely loved Cursed! It seems like such an underrated film. I grew up with Steve Martin as the Pink Panther, and nothing can replace him for me. But, Ted Wass had his own appeal and I wish he had gotten the approval for further films.

He does a competent job and everything that was asked of him, but I found him to be an exceptionally bland leading man and not very funny. When Turk Thrust II shows up for his cameo and is the funniest thing in the entire film, that's a problem.

You're spot on about everyone wanting Sellers and that should have been the clue to just let the series die with him.

Not even Steve Martin could compete with Peter Sellers and Martin himself is a comic genius. Sellers just owned the role of Inspector Clouseau (insert Sellers voice saying "Chief Inspector" here) that's why I liked Ted Wass because he created a new character, yes they were both bumbling idiots but in Curse I was watching Clifton Sleigh not Clouseau.

I actually enjoyed the Steve Martin films for what they were. Martin is just as much of a comedic genius as Sellers was but it's always tough to play a character so closely identified with (and created by) another actor.

I'd rather watch those films than Trail, Curse or Son.

I agree with Trail and Son but obviously I like Curse so I would place it above the Steve Martin films although I also enjoyed the Martin films for what they were.

Oh, I normally like Steve Martin, but there's only one Jacques Clouseau.

Honestly after seeing the first Martin film, I thought that he and Kevin Kline should've switched roles. I think Kline would've made a great Clouseau.
