Default The Amazing Spider-Man (TV Series 1977-1979)

Today's Spidey's 60th birthday. Was hoping it'd be the day Shout Factory would announce their Blu-ray release of his not-so-amazing live action TV series (if, indeed, they do have Blu-ray rights to it). But, alas, no. Chances it's coming soon?

You have caused great disappointment today. Making new forum topics is a great responsibility.

You're not supposed to make posts like this unless there's actually news about a BD release. Use the wishlist forum for stuff like this.

I have a UK VHS from MIA of the two movies. Did this series ever get a home video release in the US?

Good news is: This series is with Sony (Columbia Pictures Television co-produced it with Marvel and Fries Productions) and luckily not in the clutches of the House of Mouse.

The bad: they haven't created any new masters since the VHS/syndication days. Since it's only 13 episodes, they'd probably see investing in new HD transfers worthwhile as the franchise is super popular now.

Wasn't it owned by New World Studios back in the day?

Though the last release of the series (The 1997 Rhino VHSs) credits the copyright to "Danchuk Productions":

I got super excited when I seen the post..then came in here to great disappointment. I just wish DC & Marvel would release everything they've ever made, live action & animated series on Blu-Ray.

Also got fooled by the misplacement of the original post, but at least it's been moved into the correct forum now.

I don't recall New World owning the series; they did own Marvel itself and its characters for a few years.

As far as anyone knows, Danchuk Productions was the last company that held rights to the series. Columbia only distributed the three movies theatrically, but didn't hold any rights to them specifically.

Whatever the reason for holdup with the series is, it lies with Danchuk Productions.

Danchuk actually refers to both Charles Fries Productions and Dan Goodman Productions, who jointly produced the show.

Clearly, something happened between 1997 (when the last official releases of the series were put out on home video) and 2002 (when the first Spider-Man movie was released) that took the series out of all official circulation. Otherwise, someone would have tried to cash in on the first Spidey movie at least.

I think it's possible that there's some problem with how the live-action Spider-Man series' rights were split between Charles Fries and Dan Goodman. It's also quite likely that, simply due to the series' (undeserved) poor reputation, no one has ever seriously looked into resolving the matter.

And that could be why a TV series featuring one of the world's most famous fictional characters is now effectively "lost", not even officially appearing on any streaming service.

Is this the live action series with the funky music? I loved those as a kid. They'll probably look dated by now, but still, would be cool to rewatch those.

I think they looked dated two days after broadcast.

But I still want them!
