Default The Midnight Club (Netflix)

Quote:
The Midnight Club has set a date for its first meeting — and you’re cordially invited.

The new Netflix series from The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan will premiere on Friday, October 7. The announcement came as part of Netflix’s Geeked Week celebration of its horror, sci-fi and fantasy content.

The streamer also released a teaser for the series — which you can watch above — taking us inside a creepy and isolated house with lots of grand staircases and chandeliers. When the watch of one of its young inhabitants starts beeping at midnight, they begin a toast that sounds eerily like an incantation: “To those before, to those after; to us now, and to those beyond; seen or unseen; here, but not here.” They drink on it as ominous lightning crashes outside… and what is that dark figure that appears before them?!

Based on the Christopher Pike YA novel, The Midnight Club centers on a tight-knit group of terminally ill young adults who live in a hospice run by a mysterious doctor. Flanagan serves as showrunner and EP, along with co-creator Leah Fong. The cast includes several Flanagan-verse veterans like Samantha Sloyan and Zach Gilford, along with Nightmare on Elm Street legend Heather Langenkamp as the doctor.

To those before, to those after. To us now, and to those beyond: welcome to THE MIDNIGHT CLUB, a new Netflix horror series from Mike Flanagan the producers of The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass. The Midnight Club release date is October 7.

At a hospice for terminally ill young adults, eight patients come together every night at midnight to tell each other stories – and make a pact that the next of them to die will give the group a sign from the beyond. The Midnight Club is based on the 1994 novel of the same name as well as other works by Christopher Pike.

Surprised there hasn't been more adaptations of Christopher Pike's novels. He was as popular as RL Stine in the 90s. Maybe this will get the ball rolling.

NBC adapted his book Fall Into Darkness as a TV movie in 1996 and wanted to do more, but Pike was so dissatisfied with the movie he declined their offer.

NBC then moved on to Lois Duncan with made-for-TV adaptations of Killing Mr. Griffin and Gallows Hill (the movie was titled I've Been Waiting For You).

I'm pretty excited about Heather Langenkamp, particularly how the role parallels Dream Warriors.

Just the first two episodes I believe. He co-wrote the teleplay for nearly of the episodes also.

Ah well, some Flanagan is better than no Flanagan.

Nobody else watching this? I've watched the first two and at best I'd say it's "ok". A huge step down from Midnight Mass.

I actually had never heard of him, this book, or any of his others lol

Well, this is a YA novel, so it's not going to be on par in general probably. I've watched 4 episodes so far, and yeah it's... "fine." The acting can be a little iffy from most of the actors and I feel like it focuses more on the stories they're telling than the actual show story... but I'll finish it. I'm just only half interested so far.

Interesting premise. Kind of reminds me of Ghost Lab, which is also on Netflix.

Was alright. Ruth Codd was the highlight of this series, which was also her first acting role. Her episode 'Anya' was the standout.

I will still rate this below Hill House, Bly Manor and Midnight Mass. The Midnight Club had surprisingly little tension, horror and supernatural elements.

If it's anything like Midnight Mass/Hill House, I'll love it.

The Midnight Club unfortunately lacks a proper antagonist. Hamish Linklater and Samantha Sloyan were excellent in Midnight Mass and in my opinion, Mike Flanagan's newest pales in comparison in that department.

I love everything Flanagan has done EXCEPT Midnight Mass. Thought it was a self indulgent, overwritten, slog fest.

Will I care for this?
