Default Blu-ray settings for PS3

Hi everyone I admit I am a novice when it comes to this so hoping someone can help me.
Just purchased a PS3 and brought so films to go with it. When I play the film it seems to revert to SD in playback. I tried a couple of films and it was the same. I contacted the Sony helpdesk who said it must be my tv but I explained that the games are definately in HD!!
Ive tried looking at what the best settings should be so can anyone help?

IGN once did a piece on that: a complete run-down, setting-per-setting how to obtain opitmal playback depending on your equipment. I don't have a direct link but if you go on their site, you should be able to find it with a search.

Not sure if it'll help, but worth a shot.

Otherwise, it could also be connected to the settings on your TV or the kind of cable you use to connect your PS3 to the TV.
