Finland Fallen Leaves | Aki Kaurismäki

Quote:
Despite teasing his retirement in 2017, “Le Havre” director Aki Kaurismäki will follow his Berlin Silver Bear winner “The Other Side of Hope” with a new feature film under the working title of “Dead Leaves” (“Kuolleet lehdet” in Finnish).

The new project was announced on Friday by Helsinki-based company B-Plan Distribution.

The film will star Alma Pöysti, who recently starred in Zaida Bergroth biopic “Tove,” about Moomins creator Tove Jansson — a film that won her a Jussi award for best actress in 2021. Jussi Vatanen, known for the drama “Forest Giant” and smash hit trilogy “Lapland Odyssey” has also joined the cast. The film’s supporting cast and crew will be announced at a later date.

“Dead Leaves,” which will mark the Finnish director’s 19th feature, will start shooting at the end of August in Helsinki. According to B-Plan Distribution, it will be the fourth instalment that continues Kaurismäki’s so-called Proletariat Trilogy, which spans such acclaimed films as “Shadows in Paradise,” “Ariel” and “The Match Factory Girl.”

Once again, it will be shot by the auteur’s trusted cinematographer, Timo Salminen. [+]

Big Kaurismäki fan since I caught Ariel at a local arthouse. Looking forward to this.

Looks like a Kaurismäki film, which is good so far! Looking forward to watching it and hoping it's good.

I have loved all of his movies, but especially the ones in the Proletariat Trilogy.

And, of course, Leningrad Cowboys Go America.

The Match Factory Girl (1990) is my favourite of his. Probably his darkest film, very restrained and rigorous. The Man Without a Past (2002) would be on second place, I think it was the first one I saw.

Looks a tiny pit more rustic and naturalistic compared to his most recent stuff, be interesting to see how that slight tweak in tone plays off in the full film.

Mubi has snapped up rights to the acclaimed feature Fallen Leaves, written and directed by Aki Kaurismäki, in a competitive situation, following its world premiere in Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

While specifics as to the release plans have yet to be announced, aside from the fact that the title will go to theaters, Mubi said on Wednesday that it’s picked up rights for North America, UK, Ireland, Latin America and Turkey.

The 20th feature from Kaurismäki, whose Cannes prize winner The Man Without a Past went on to nab a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination in 2003, Fallen Leaves tells the story of two lonely people (Alma Pöysti, Jussi Vatanen) who meet each other by chance in the Helsinki night and try to find the first, only, and ultimate love of their lives. Their path towards this honorable goal is clouded by the man’s alcoholism, lost phone numbers, not knowing each other’s names or addresses, and life’s general tendency to place obstacles in the way of those seeking their happiness.

Described in the review of Deadline’s Pete Hammond as “a flat-out gem” that’s “wonderful, wryly funny, and poignant,” Fallen Leaves is also the fourth film in a working-class film series from Kaurismäki, coming on the heels of the films Shadows in Paradise, Ariel and The Match Factory Girl.

The film, also starring Janne Hyytiäinen and Nuppu Koivu, was produced by Sputnik Oy and Bufo and co-produced by Pandora Film. It was made with the support of the Finnish Film Foundation, Yle, the Finnish Broadcasting Company, ZDF/ARTE, ARTE G.E.I.E, Filmförderungsanstalt, and Film-und Medienstiftung NRW.

Easily one of the year's best movies. Kaurismäki puts a lot of other directors in the same age range to shame.

Seen yesterday; it was my baptism with Kaurismaki, and I guess another journey is beginning.
Truly a well crafted film, and Kaurismaki perfectly achieve the bittersweet-ness that I love so much, and with the soft touch that is needed. It is the "extra" that makes me really love a movie. The social awareness and clever movie references are a plus.

Especially in Europe it is the year of Anatomy of a Fall, but I think this one is far superior, even in the main actress.
