The American dream has rarely seemed so far away as in the raw, vérité Take Out, by Sean Baker and Shih-Ching Tsou, an immersion in the life of an undocumented Chinese immigrant struggling to get by on the margins of post-9/11 New York City. Facing violent retaliation from a loan shark, restaurant deliveryman Ming Ding (Charles Jang) has until nightfall to pay back the money he owes, and he encounters both crushing setbacks and moments of unexpected humanity as he races against time to earn enough in tips over the course of a frantic day. From this simple setup, Baker and Tsou fashion a kind of neorealist survival thriller of the everyday, shedding compassionate light on the too often overlooked lives and labor that keep New York running.

Honestly I could see the latter being attached as an extra on the former.

Yes, Criterion will be releasing both of those films eventually. I expected a Sean Baker Early Films set, rather than solo releases, but I'm glad they're finally coming out.

Since Take Out is getting a solo release I hope the other two are individuals. Easier that way. Don't want a repeat of Del Toro's trilogy (something I own as individual releases).

Finally watched my copy. Just figured I'd mention that this was shot on miniDV (SD) so buyer beware: do not expect an visual stunner despite the 4k scan.

Not a problem for me, I was first in line to buy the blu of 28 Days Later knowing it would look ugly, I just care that it looks like how the director intended.

It's been over two years since the release Take Out yet the also rumoured potential releases of Four Letter Words and Prince of Broadway are still unreleased. I know Sean's been busy with Anora but I hope we get more news on these films eventually/soon.

He's been saying at Q&As that at least Prince of Broadway (and possibly both?) will be out in "early 2025"
