Soooo psyched to hear about the work on Velvet Goldmine. Now I can stop debating whether to buy a ridiculously overpriced used copy. I wonder if we'll get a new VG disc before the theatrical cut of Amadeus. . .

Seems there's some confusion about whether Criterion has Velvet Goldmine or Velvet Underground, or both. The other Haynes film has its own thread that just started too.

I hope it's both.

I’m gonna hope for both, because I would love both from them.

Is there a Todd Haynes retrospective going on somewhere or did they just sneak "Superstar" in front of "Velvet Goldmine" to skirt the ban?

The Tribeca Film Festival played a new restoration of Velvet Goldmine where reportedly a producer (Vachon?) said during the Q&A that Criterion would be releasing Goldmine. The next day, the Hammer had a program of newly restored Haynes short films, included an (as usual) unadvertised Superstar. During that Q&A, Haynes reportedly said Criterion will be releasing Underground, and is interested in Goldmine. So it's not entirely clear what's actually confirmed in the works and what is just a possibility. (Caveat that both of those "quotes" are from second-hand, unofficial sources: Letterboxd and Reddit users.)

But Superstar has played a few times publicly in the past few years, and it's always unannounced, if often winkingly. Basically if you see a listing for a Haynes program that's an unusually brief shorts program or that mentions a special surprise screening, you can safely bet it's going to include Superstar.

If they do then I hope it's a 4K release and includes the longer UK cut of the film.

a goldmine/underground double feature 4k set would be amazing

i second a trainspotting 4k back in the collection, but mostly i wish disney would stop sitting on Boyle’s fox titles that never had a bluray release as well.

Really hope this happens, if for no other reason than that it would allow me to finally complete my blu-ray trilogy of "films I watched way too many times on IFC while coming out" (the others being The Dreamers and Y tu mama tambien).

I bought a nice I'm Not There Blu from Korea recently and now I'm wondering if that'll ever get a release in the US.

I asked Kino about it, some time ago, and they said a different label has it. I don’t know who or remember how long ago it was. Maybe Criterion is doing a Haynes music set.

I really wish that some kind of agreement could be reached with Richard Carpenter and Karen Carpenter's estate (or whoever else needs to be involved) to get a legitimate release of Superstar out there. I recall it being a surprisingly sympathetic and touching film.

Speaking of freedoms, the journalist in me has to ask about your banned Barbie-doll Carpenters short, Superstar, which Richard Carpenter has forbidden you from showing. What's the status? I hope you don't mind me checking in.

No, I love it. Thank you for asking. There have been some legal opinions written about the film that seem favorable to a way through. But there's a lot more work that I need to do that I haven't had time to, which is annotate the film and provide all of the sources of information and so forth. It's been shown a couple of times, not announced publicly, and not for any fee, not for any ticket, under the terms of its cease and desist. But it has been remastered by UCLA and Sundance a couple years ago, and it looks so beautiful. Every time I see it now, I'm just like, Oh, man, I'm so lucky that we have this version out there.

You seem hopeful.

Yes, it'll happen. It's not something we're working on at the moment, but it's going to happen — it will happen, yeah.

I believe the UK was Film4.

Produced by Christine Vachon, long time collaborator with Haynes and she and Killer Films have a high success rate.

Velvet Underground it is:

https://www.criterion.com/films/3338...et-underground

That always seemed like the more realistic option, but maybe we'll be in luck and they'll do Velvet Goldmine too, eventually.

Have they done any other Miramax films since Paramount took over their home video?

I wonder if Criterion will push for it to bring back laserdisc titles like Chasing Amy, Sling Blade, Trainspotting, Pulp Fiction.

I'm not sure if Paramount pulling so many titles from Criterion recently to reissue them in-house is any indication that they don't intend to let the Miramax titles out of their hands...

They haven't gotten any Miramax titles from Paramount, but they did get The Piano after Miramax seemingly lost US rights.

It also seems Miramax has lost other film rights in the US, like Sling Blade which quickly went OOP from Paramount. This one might also be in the same situation, no longer with Miramax.

The Reddit user who broke the news states it was presented by Sony Pictures Classics, so neither Miramax, nor Paramount has the rights anymore.

Surprised no one brought it up before, but even Haynes himself confirms it's with Sony now:

Quote:
Director Todd Haynes and actor Micko Westmoreland were on hand to take questions from reporters on the red carpet. In a candid interview with No Rest for the Weekend’s Kayla Vera, Haynes announced the film had been acquired by Sony Pictures Classics and is planning a re-release. “Sony Pictures Classics just acquired it… so that’s underway.”
