Sega has cancelled Hyenas, the multiplayer extraction shooter in development at UK studio Creative Assembly.

Issuing a warning to investors that it will record a loss for the financial year, Sega said "profitability has been lowered mainly in European bases". As a result, it has implemented "structural reforms aimed at increasing efficiency", and reviewed in-development games. "We have made the difficult decision to cancel some titles under the development as well as to reduce the fixed expenses," Sega said.

"In response to the lower profitability of the European region, we have reviewed the title portfolio of each development base in Europe and the resulting action will be to cancel Hyenas and some unannounced titles under development," Sega continued. "Accordingly, we will implement a write-down of work-in-progress for titles under development."

In a statement issued to IGN, Creative Assembly confirmed a redundancy consultation had begun and job losses may follow.

"Creative Assembly, part of Sega Europe, has announced the beginning of a redundancy consultation process, alongside ending development of Hyenas. This decision affects areas of its UK operations, which may result in job losses.

"We understand that this has a significant impact on our people, whether they are directly at-risk of redundancy or not. Our people-first approach remains foundational to how we operate; the priority is to work with those whose jobs are at-risk and re-allocate them to other available opportunities at CA wherever possible.

"We are absolutely committed to delivering more exciting game experiences long into the future, which will delight both current and potential players all over the world."

I know this isn't something that was on my radar to really play, but i feel like game devs maybe should think of launching something akin to Early Access programmes during development phases to get real term feedback and make adjustments accordingly before a full fledged release.

This would at least help lessen the burden of fully funding these risky titles before full launch and actually help them pinpoint areas they need to change for better engagement. I understand not every game is suitable for that, but with the premise of this, seems like it would have been ripe for it.

I was in several gameplay sessions. Sometimes you just sit and wonder when a game is announced who they're trying to target. Everybody thinks they can peel people off of Overwatch and Fortnite when they need to be doing something new.

Hyenas had a private beta like two weeks ago. This is another Redfall situation, where corporate management takes a developer who's known for one specific type of game and forces them to make a GaaS flavor-of-the-month shooter that nobody asked for. We're likely to see the same thing happen with games like Foamstars from Square Enix and possibly the Marathon reboot, assuming Sony first-party money and Bungie's name can't save it.
