USA My Father's Glory / My Mother's Castle (1990) coming from Film Movement Classics

Update: Film Movement apparently received the wrong masters for their initial release. They are offering replacements. Please contact them at info@filmmovement.com ...A new wide release of the corrected version is now set for July 31st 2024.

Film Movement has acquired two French classics from Yves Roberts, My Father's Glory (La Gloire de mon père), and its sequel My Mother's Castle (Le château de ma mère). Both are adapted from the autobiographical novels by Marcel Pagnol (Manon of the Spring / Jean de Florette). Release is set for October 17th, 2023.

Quote:
Bonus Features:

Heritage and Nostalgia video essay by Ludovic Cortade, Associate Professor in French Literature, Thought and Culture at New York University

A Question of Tribe featurette with director Yves Robert’s son Jean-Denis Robert, grandson Martin Drescher, and cinematographer Robert Alazraki
16-page booklet with new essay by filmmaker, producer and writer Kat Ellinger
My Father's Glory (La Gloire de mon père) (1990)

Quote:
Raised by his science teacher father, Joseph Pagnol (Philippe Caubère), and seamstress mother Augustine (Nathalie Roussel), young Marcel (Julien Ciamaca) grows up during the turn of the century in awe of his rationalist dad. When the family takes a summer vacation in the countryside, Marcel becomes friends with Lili (Joris Molinas), who teaches him about rural life. Meanwhile, tensions between Joseph and his religious brother-in-law, Jules (Didier Pain), grow during their hunting expeditions.
My Mother's Castle (Le château de ma mère) (1990)

Quote:
To his chagrin, young Marcel Pagnol (Julien Ciamaca) and his family move back to their home in Marseilles, France, far from their pastoral holiday cottage in the hills. Determined, Marcel makes the long voyage back to the cottage on foot and lands himself in trouble. One day Marcel's father (Philippe Caubère) discovers a shortcut to the cottage, but it requires trespassing. Despite their trepidations, Marcel and his family begin using the secret trail to reach their cottage.

Wonderful news! Our French teacher showed these two films to our French class in HS and I've been a fan ever since.

The region-free Gaumont releases look nice, so this should be the same remastered transfers. Great to see a US release.

I watched these over the weekend, and they're just as lovely as I remembered them. However, I think it's strange that the subtitles stay displayed even after the dialogue finishes. The last subtitle will show until the next line of dialogue comes along to replace it.

Has anyone else seen this issue with their copy?

Not on my player.

It's super interesting that these are indeed the same 4K restorations that were released by Gaumont a few years ago, but with completely different color timing. The Gaumont discs were (predictably) HEAVILY tealed, with blues aqua and blacks leaning blue. These Film Movement discs have a much warmer tone and have properly rendered blues. The grain looks a little more refined on the Gaumont discs, but these new US versions are the go-to to watch.

ON closer inspection, I'm wondering if Gaumont sent Film Movement the wrong masters. The FM has less detail and whites on occasion (typically windows) are blown out, whereas that detail is present on the Gaumont. Colors lean redder as opposed to teal. It doesn't;t look like a case of one company "fixing" another company's color grading.

That's a little disappointing. I just got the Film Movement release last week. Based on your screenshots, I would've have liked Gaumont's details with Film Movement's coloring.

I sent Film Movement an email asking if anyone could look into it. But if they do replace it with the proper masters, they would certainly have the Gaumont's colors. I'm keeping both discs, but not sure which one will be my go-to.

Please let me know what they say. With the second screenshot, the suit goes from black to teal. So I'd probably rather have a little less detail than incorrect colors.

Me, too, in most cases. What bothers me most are the blown out windows. There is another shot in the FM where the side of his face is blown out and even green from the harsh window light, but on the Gaumont the exposure is rendered perfectly.

This shot alone makes me vastly prefer the Gaumont, teal or not.

Yeah I see what you mean. Maybe I'm going to regret going with Film Movement on this one.

Wow, I completely agree. I would rather have the Gaumont one based on those screenshots. Please let us know if you get a response from Film Movement. I never heard back from them when I emailed them regarding the subtitle problem I have.

I got a response:

Quote:
As far as I am aware, the Blu-Ray that we put out of these films were the restorations licensed to us by Gaumont.

I can go ahead and pass this along to our tech team to potentially take a look into what may have happened here, and if they have any other information.

Another response:

Quote:
We definitely used the Gaumont restoration. There’s a possibility that data/quality was lost in the frame rate conversion, which we are asking them about now.

We will not be replacing it, though, as this would be far too costly, unfortunately.

"Far too costly" to replace.

Yeah disappointing. Someone from Film Movement said he's contacting Gaumont to see what happened, but he hasn't let me know their response.

LOL yeah, they didn't use the Gaumont restoration. But the Gaumont discs are region free so it's no big loss, really. They just effed up.

And at least they admit the problem and are honest about why they won't fix it unlike another label.
