Default Holding Physical Media

Got a question for anyone?

When holding a DVD, Bluray, 4K Ultra HD, Boxset, TV Series, etc. What do you first think about when you hold it.

Do you think about the actors in it, the production year, the ratings, the features, the audio tracks, subtitles, video format, the media companies, the studios, etc.

I'm thinking about putting it in my player so I can watch it.

Don't really care. I barely even look at the packaging before putting it in the closed bookcase. Think it partly comes from backing up for years and years and watching with my computer. My attachment is to the content of the disc, mostly the m2ts file(s) containing just the movie.

I think do I really want to watch that movie or TV show. Often, I actually don't end up watching the disc in my hand and turn to something else. Sometimes I choose to watch Youtube instead.

I never watch my BDs. I just grab a movie from my shelf, hold it in my hands and I meditate and think about the actors in it, the production year, the ratings, the features, the audio tracks, subtitles, video format, the media companies, and the studios. It's so therapeutic for me!

I'm pretty sure I've had all these thoughts at some point:
  • Holy sh*t it finally arrived!
  • This packaging is nice!
  • I will watch this right now!
  • Eh, I'll watch it whenever I can.
  • This artwork sucks.
  • Why did I buy this again?
  • Oh crap, the booklet has a fold in it.
  • Oh crap, the spine is slashed.
  • Oh crap, the hub is broken and the disc is probably scratched.
  • Oh crap, the case is shattered.
  • Oh cool, everything is perfect and nothing is wrong whatsoever.
  • Has anybody ever read these Blu-Ray user guides?
  • Well shoot, I own a two-disc DVD and an older Blu-Ray and they all have different extras--hope I have a spare 4-disc case to hold it all with.
  • Do I have too many movies?
  • Did I leave the oven on?

Sometimes I look at the special features listed on the back if it's something I've never seen the special features for. Otherwise I'll admire the cover art before putting the disc in my plater.

One thing I think about sometimes is how clumsy a big ol' DVD case feels compared to a Blu Ray case. That probably sounds weird and there's not a great deal of size difference and I probably don't even really think that when I'm actually holding the DVD case in my hand but sometimes I just think about how the Blu Ray case feels better in my hands.

You should try handling a LaserDisc...

If I'm at the point where I'm physically handling the disc/case then I'm probably thinking "I wonder how long this is and if I have time to watch this plus a second feature before bed".

I usually think about it as a work of art and how it made me feel, memories of it, where I was, who I was with. The tricked out packages are gonna reflect your bond to the movie. The extras and so on are icing on the cake. It depends how much you value the art of cinema.
