Criterion In the Mood for Love 4K UHD (2000)

In the Mood for Love 4K Blu-ray

Hong Kong, 1962: Chow Mo Wan (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) and Su Li Zhen (Maggie Cheung Man Yuk) move into neighboring apartments on the same day. Their encounters are formal and polite—until a discovery about their spouses creates an intimate bond between them. At once delicately mannered and visually extravagant, Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. With its aching sound*track and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping Bing, this film has been a major stylistic influence on the past two decades of cinema, and is a milestone in Wong’s redoubtable career.

Quote:
4K digital restoration with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, both supervised and approved by director Wong Kar Wai
One 4K UHD disc of the film and one Blu-ray with the film and special features

Just bought this the past B&N sale. Good thing I didn't open it yet and am still within the return window.

Keep your copy in case the new timing still looks poopoo.

Two different color grades. Many prefer the look of the 2012 blu over the one in the 2021 WKW box. I still need to do my homework on this new resto and I encourage everyone else to do the same.

Why do Criterion's emails have to be so cryptic?

What we all want to see:

"Coming in November:
Power of the Dog 4K
Malcolm X 4K
In the Mood for Love 4K"

What they say:

"Coming in November, a provocative tour de force revisionist revivalism iconic riveting explosive bunch of films"

The new colour grade isn't very good.

Keep the blu-ray, it has a good transfer.

I don't care if wong kar wai approved it, he hasn't really made anything decent since this film. Lots of decisions in his "restorations" are questionable and even makes you think he has gone a bit George Lucas on us.

Wow, awesome. Was hoping for a solo Chungking Express first, but maybe we can assume that will be coming down the line now with this release.

What they get me to do is to go blu-ray.com and figure out what's being released on 4K and what isn't.

I'm a little miffed at having bought the World of WKW set, but perhaps they won't release all the films in the set on UHD. My guess is we'll only get Chungking Express on UHD after this.

Just a shame the new 4K transfers for his films are awful.

In the Mood for Love & Chungking Express are my two fav films from him, and I have both original Criterion BLUs and those will be the versions to watch.

He's only made three movies since, I think, and I would definitely consider 2046 and The Grandmaster better than "decent". I can't say I'm a fan of the new color timing with the recent box set, though. I'm glad I didn't bother selling Happy Together, Fallen Angels, Chungking Express, and In the Mood for Love. The new grading makes them feel like an extension of one another, and maybe that was the point, but the movies lost a bit of their personal identify with the most recent releases.

On that note, no idea how I feel about this 4K release. It'll be the new timing for sure.

Chungking Express I think looks better now than the previous release. I can see a 4K of that being a winner. The 1080p remaster was an improvement.

My second favorite movie of all time.

I don't purchase many discs anymore but this one is a guaranteed buy.

True looking over the CAPS for Chungking again that on 4K should have been the title to release!

In the Mood for Love.... I can't handle the color changes at all.
