Do rugs/carpets dampen sound or is it extremely minor in your experience?

I really don't like keeping this rug in my room. I just do it for the neighbors. But I've never been down there, so I don't know if it helps at all.

Concrete, underlay, and wood flooring or carpet would be doing most of the noise-buffering for folk downstairs.

The rug is likely only helping your room acoustics, if more warmth is your sound preference.

You could do a noise test by removing the rug and waiting for complaints.

In about six years, I've only had them knock once, when I had the system in the living room. They're probably just too reserved to complain. But I don't wanna abuse their nature. Sometimes they'll run around upstairs, but I don't know if it's to get back at me.

I've lived in an apartment complex, and most of them are not soundproof due to cheap building materials and are subjected to complaints from surrounding neighbors. Maintain the volume of your sound system at a moderate level, and you shouldn't have any problems. There are certain neighbors who like to dictate and control other people in the complex on how to live and want them to conform to their lifestyle (if you let them), but don't allow it to begin and if so, put a stop to it immediately and go to management for harassment. You pay your rent just the same as your neighbors pay theirs, and you are entitled to have some freedom to do what you want to do in your own home that you're paying for because, nobody wants to feel like a prisoner in their own home, living in fear.

I have my subwoofer on a rug just big enough for it to sit on. In my old house the vibrations from the sub actually left a square on the hardwood floor.

If it's loud enough, something will rattle, i.e. hanging pictures. You'll notice or you won't. If you're not noticing, then it's not loud enough, or you have carpet and curtains everywhere!

When I did my home theatre the floor was expoy'd concrete - which everyone was like no!!!!!! You need carpet!!!! I put in an 3/4 room sized shaggy rug and it's been sufficient to dampen the sound.
