I wonder how the encoding will be on this. If it ends up being a FIM joint I might go with it.

Surprised it took them this long after the Criterion considering how UHD friendly Studio Canal generally are and the recent publicity due to the Oscar buzz around The Power of the Dog

So based on the extras it looks like it has the lengthy interview (~76 mins) that the original UK blu had, but the 25th anniversary blu dropped, however it drops the commentary all previous Studio Canal/Optimum releases - blu and DVD - had? Hopefully that's an oversight in the listed specs. Would be nice for Studio Canal to include all their previous extras for once...

Although that said, if it's an FiM encode, I won't care about the extras.

As of today I doubt it, since it's not mentioned on their twitter yet - I checked the other day.

well Studiocanal doesn't own rights for France, and most of their UK oriented releases are by FiM, so the chance is good.

But specs also dropped Dolby Vision (not only commentary)

No, chances aren't good IMO, since, as I said, FiM's twitter still doesn't mention anything about 'The Piano'. Opposed to Flatliners I'd like to add. And if the specs dropped DV, it's even less likely, so unless you want to contradict just for the sake of it, you might want to share where your optimism is coming from.

Well, I know that and I considered the IMO (un)likelihood knowing that FiM is possible. And he just gave another reason why it's not likely.

I considered the possibility of FiM myself before. But it was another SC Piano thread, because the same person creating the German one created a new UK SC Piano thread now. Why people do that I don't know.

Going to be even more galling if the German SC release has the commentary (and/or DV) and the UK one doesn't. Presumably, there's a chance the discs are for both Germany and the UK - but obviously not guaranteed, given titles like Leon that are different despite both being SC.

FiM doesn't drop hints on their Twitter for every film. Usually the bigger ones. I'd say The Piano would be one of those ones, but seeing as there's no post it either isn't and it's happening or it's not happening. I suppose next time Mr. M pops up one of us can ask and see if he can answer.

Yes, but I am only talking about odds. And currently the odds aren't in favour of it being a FiM release. And bringing up "dropping DV" doesn't increase the odds, does it? Which is all I said. Which results in me being told that it might be FiM. I ****ing know that, pardon my language.

Dropping DV wouldn't necessarily be FiM's choice though. I'm simply pointing that out. No need to get spicy.

Look, I really only get spicy when I have a rather good reason. In this care here it was basically this:

[Show spoiler]precondition: it's summer and we all know that
A: "Will the sun shine tomorrow?"
B: "First forecast indicates no."
C: "Second forecast also indicates no. It's summer and the sun might shine tomorrow."
B: "But it's not very likely, is it?"
D: "But C said it's summer."
B: "Yes, I know, but 2 forecasts say the sun won't shine tomorrow."
E: "But it's summer and the sun might shine tomorrow."

And I for one would totally understand, if B reacts a little spicey by then.

I've yet to see a FiM UHD that doesn't come with at least MEL DV, but yes, it's also possible. Is it likely? No.

Having said that, I don't even know where exactly the "DV got dropped" is coming from or if that's a fact. I just think that FiM is not very likely, if there is no DV. Nothing more and nothing less.

German site says that it will include DV

Quote:
Extras
Audiokommentar von Jane Campion & Jan Chapman; Interview mit Jane Campion & Jan Chapman; Making of; 25 Jahre Das Piano; Interview mit Kameramann Stuart Dryburgh; Interview mit Setdesigner Andrew McAlpine; Interview mit Maori-Berater Waihoroi Shortland; Originaltrailer
Technische Angaben

Bild: 1,85:1 2160p/ Dolby Vision (UHD), 1,85:1 1080/24p Full HD (Blu-ray)
Sprachen/Ton: Deutsch (Stereo PCM), Englisch (5.1 DTS-HD MA), Hörfilmfassung für Sehbehinderte (Stereo DTS-HD MA
Untertitel: Deutsch, Deutsch für Hörgeschädigte, Englisch für Hörgeschädigte
Given the fact that it has English SDH - they can be same discs, and both have audiocommentary

Also does 'Interview mit Jane Campion & Jan Chapman' ever appeared anywhere? because it could easily be mistake and it's interview with 'Jane Campion and Amy Taubin' from criterion release, since all 2021 interviews appear on that disc also. So the only missing thing for Studiocanal will be short and 3 archival interviews.

Can be, but not guaranteed to be. Leon's UHD has English HoH subtitles in Germany, from Studio Canal, yet the UK release (also from Studio Canal) only has English audio/subtitles. Still no idea why that one wasn't dual-territory. Hopefully either this one is, or the UK set features the commentary and DV even if it's a separate disc encode.

Yes, it’s a 76 minute interview included on the 2014 Blu-ray and Optimum DVD release.
