I saw this yesterday, and Nighy will definitely get an Oscar nomination for this performance. Excellent acting all around and technically expertly made movie. In my top ten of the year.

I think this is without a doubt one of the best movies of 2022, and Nighy's masterful performance very likely the best one of its category. It is an acting achievement of the highest caliber, accomplishing so much while seemingly doing so little. Nighy can convey more feelings with just a quiet look than other actors could with a whole impassioned speech.
What I find so wonderful about this movie is that even though it is also set in the 1950s, it has streamlined so much of what was in Ikiru, which I suppose was appealing to Japanese audiences of that time, and doing so has resulted in a movie that is almost an hour shorter than Kurosawa's. So there's a lot less talk about how local politics works, and much more emphasis on the human element. The supporting cast is also top-notch, of course, but what makes this movie so incredibly riveting is absolutely's Nighy's astonishing tour-de-force. It is one for the ages. |

Saw this today and enjoyed it. This is the second film I've seen this month with a less typical aspect ratio. The Whale was the other which was also a good movie. I checked Ikiru on IMDB when I got home and there was a picture with Takashi Shimura sitting on a swing so I'm wondering just how much was copied from Kurosawa's movie.

This was pretty good. I haven't seen the original but now I want to check it out. It was funny that the new leader said those inspiring words but it didn't change how the department did things. Was there something special about the restaurant that Mr. Williams took Miss Harris too? I wasn't sure why she was so surprised when he mentioned its name. It was also weird that Mr. Williams said that he was part Scottish in the bar. I didn't think that would be so special in London.
