Sony Pictures Karate Kid: Legends (2025)

Quote:
A big plus here is the announcement of a brand new Karate Kid movie for June 7, 2024 which doesn’t have any talent attached in regards to stars or a director.

Murphey's Multiverse reported on this a while ago: https://www.murphysmultiverse.com/ex...rate-kid-film/

Quote:
We here at Murphy’s Multiverse can exclusively reveal that Sony is looking to cast a teen lead for a new Karate Kid film. Sony is looking for a 17-year-old male, Chinese actor who speaks both Mandarin and English. The character is referred to as Li and is said to be small for his age, but tough, smart and scrappy. He is said to be a skilled fighter and a student in Beijing who finds his life uprooted after his mother moves them to Brooklyn, New York.

Li is said to be struggling with a past tragedy, which drives a wedge between him and his doctor mom, who has managed to handle the same tragedy in her own way. After Li meets Mia, a student from his high school, and her father, Victor, at a local pizza restaurant, he’ll soon find his life has changed yet again – for the better. Li soon finds himself training Victor in the art of Kung Fu, despite his mother’s stance against violence and fighting, and ultimately back in the ring himself.

The film does not yet have a director attached, but Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit) is attached to pen the script. A start date has also yet to be revealed for the film’s production.

News of a new Karate Kid film comes after it was revealed back in December 2021 that Sony Pictures TV renewed its contract with Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg. The deal is said to run for four years and allows for the expansion of the Cobra Kai and Karate Kid franchises. This new film looks to be its own entity separate from that deal as it is a feature film.

This sounds like another shameless retread just like the Jackie Chan mess. I'll pass.

Honestly, I can't see them not making this connected to Cobra Kai in someway.

Especially since Ralph talked about a "Cobra Kai Cinematic Universe" earlier.

Yeah this seriously pisses me off. Not only does it make the title inaccurate, it makes the studio seem racist that they can’t tell the difference.

If it’s not going to be connected to the Cobra Kai series, then it’s a waste of time. But don’t bring back Jaden Smith, that was a such a shitty film.

That plotline is daft, moronic, imbecilic, asinine, and devoid of anything resembling what made Karate Kid great... for starters, and once again... KUNG-FU being in the mix. Like seriously. At least the remake which I liked acknowledged that karate is not the same as Kung fu, but for them to do this AGAIN?

Also, so the "karate-fu-chop-socki-utterly culturally ignorant studio mandated" KID is gonna teach a pizza shop owner how to do kung-pow-chi-tsu? Why? Is Papa Victor gonna enter the tournament against some rival pizza conglomerate? The ninja turtles? I'm sure Johnny Lawrence would do anything for a slice. And is Mia gonna be yet another contrived and utterly pointless love interest?

Does Sony have a writer's room full of college flunkies?

Does anyone remember the movie Dutch?

In general, it's about a rich blue collar man, played by "Al Bundy", having to pick up his love interest's son (his future stepson) from boarding school, and becomes a less cynical version of Planes, Trains, & Automobiles. During their journey, the son comments that he is trained in karate, and proceeds to physically beat up "Al Bundy", despite being less than half his size.

It was completely ludicrous, and the idea of a nu "karate" kid training an adult in a combat sport reminds me of it in a bad way.

Remember in that movie Karate Kid. Where the new guy in town trained for months. Then defeated everyone who trained since they could walk. Remember that?

umm... yeah, count me in with those amongst you who...

A.) find the current plot synopsis to be rather contrived, asinine and pointless...

and B.) find it highly annoying that the martial arts in question is kung fu rather than karate. Look. it's really quite simple... either change your ridiculously inaccurate title (or... if brand recognition is what you so desperately crave to cash in on a certain popular television show), actually respect the lore enough to feature karate
.

Jon Hurwitz, one of the creators of Cobra Kai, commented on the announcement: https://twitter.com/jonhurwitz/statu...53320391741440

Quote:
The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday. But this one isn't from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don't know much about it, but wish it well.

Yeah it's been mentioned many times since the 80s, Daniel LaPusso wouldn't be able to beat fighters like Johnny Lawrence or Chozen in a real fight. Not even in the controlled confines of a 3 points match.

Had huge potential if it was apart of Cobra Kai as that has been great and much better than the 2010 film. It will be interesting though to see the plot on whether they try to connect to Daniel, Johnny, Krese or Silver but then again, it would then be tied to Cobra Kai and they have already said it isn't.

Please don't do a remake of 2010 film.
