Thumbs up Wiseguy on Blu - September 30th

https://www.visualentertainment.tv/p...40301360447593

Never thought I’d see the day! My favourite show of the 80s. Sadly, the music issues will remain.

I used to rely on my old VHS tapes recorded in the 80s. Then DVD releases since 2003/4. Last year, I bought the German sets because the Music arc was finally released. But those eps didn’t have English audio. Then, I bought the recent VEI release because the arc was on it. Now, a Blu-Ray!

If the music issues ever get resolved I’ll buy it again :-)

This is both great news and irritating AF.

The same company put this out on DVD like two months ago, with no indication a Blu was coming right on its heels. I bought the DVD set, figuring it was the best we were ever gonna get.

Same. Thought ok this’ll be the last time but it has all 75 episodes. Oh well. Bought the Blu hope it turns up early like the dvd set this year.

Cool. Used to watch this back in the late 80's. I remember in 1 episode when Ken Wahl, plays the Dokken song called....Mr. Scary.

This is good news. Never watched Wiseguy back in the day, but did catch stream some episodes recently - it's a well-done crime drama.

The only thing that's kept me from buying this on DVD (and now on Blu) are the music replacements. This is completely understandable, but I do want to watch the show with the original music intact.

In any case, glad this is coming out on Blu for those who want this.

Those that know this series. Can you tell me which seasons are in mono and stereo? I will then update wikipedia and imdb.

Until reviews come out, I'd be a bit concerned this is just another VEI SD up-convert on blu-ray like Stargate SG-1.

Was a great series ahead of it's time !
Would love to own it but the original music is a must , for instance the use of KNIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN was a key piece to the episode .

I think Wahl said on a commentary it was too expensive to get the rights for the dvd.Years later, I read a musician from The Moody Blues say the company never even asked (!).

Irregardless, it’s still a shame but I’ll probably rebuy until it gets done proper.

I was probably one of the few people that thought the original DVD release was great except for the music issues. The image looked amazing and the stereo was wonderful. It was released in a million versions on DVD after that, but I never bought any of those releases. If they fix the music problems I would buy a Blu-ray release, if they don't I would pass. UPDATE: I just noticed that my season 1 disc 1 DVD has gone defective. This is the 2nd time this has happened on the same disc. I bought another one last time. I might have to buy this Blu-ray set after all.

I don't know, but I am pretty sure that the first season was mono, but it was released in stereo (2.0 and 5.1 stereo options) on the first DVD release. If they use the same stereo mix that was on the first DVD release it should sound great.

That doesn't surprise me that the band said they were never asked. The only song they cleared seemed to be "Good Lovin" because there was no way they could remove it without cutting out the entire scene. They also replaced songs that seemed fairly obscure and would have probably been easy to clear.

I believe that most of the music clearance issues have been resolved as of the most recent DVD. They're at least at the point where they release every single episode. I don't know if anybody in the know has checked it thoroughly, but "Nights in White Satin" is the only one I know of that's still missing.

EDIT: I just saw the DVD thread, so I guess there are two songs replaced and one song where the footage was simply removed (which was intact on a previous release). That's still a lot better than how the first pass at releasing this show went.

Brite Side by Debbie Harry is on the dvd. Good Love, Nights In White Satin, The Policy of Truth, Hit The Road Jack, Mr Scary etc are not.

At that price point, and especially knowing that they didn't do new masters for the DVDs that came out a few months back, this seems extremely likely.
