Thumbs up Sony: Blu-ray set-top players out-selling HD DVD

We're not talking about the JPN market here.. Enjoy!

Sony VP Chris Fawcett declined to provide exact market share percentages of the two sides.
He said the change occurred mostly due to the introduction of Sony’s $499 player.

I think this is based on more profit made per unit than actual numbers.
I could be wrong though.

They can attach-rate-my-ass until they turn blu!!! It doesnt matter oif they have more movies per player, when we, supposedly according to them, have less dedicate players, but somehow we have 2:1 lead on movie sales almost worldwide....the whole attach-rate term goes out the window!

I guess maybe some of those insiders were right about this format war ending sooner than expected....I mean its still early, but I think a winner could be declared by Q2/Q3 2008

What kind of percentages does the chart show? Based on monthly sales or cumulated? Do we now have more Blu ray set tops out there in total or only for two months?

That is not odd at all. The graphs must sum to 100%, so if BD increases, HD decreases and vice-versa.

Still, this number is quite different from the 2:1 advantage HD-DVD claimed yesterday for stand-alone market share(if you take out DVD, which I find strange since DVD players should still sell a LOT more than what they showed...)

Player prices is the BDA's trump card, and another price drop will flush HD-DVD down the toilet. Especially since HD-DVD has already played that card, and they are out of options.

These figures look great... it shows that people generally back BD more despite being 2x the price. Just think of Sony released at $299 instead of $499!

(Notice the subtle knife-twisting by Sony: they spell it HD-DVD (incorrectly?))

i think its very obvious why tosh offered the big bucks to Paramount. They are really getting tanked in what was really their last valid argument: standalones. This war will be over in Q1 08 (universal neutrality). Paramount is going to look like the stupidest kids on the block.

If you look at the bottom of the graph there, you can see a blurry line of numbers. Those are dates. The graph represent weekly sales.

This is why AVS is kickin' up a storm with yields again.

We really need some details, and from more than one source.

If it's been happening for 12 weeks, why hasn't that word gotten out before now? Something isn't adding up right.

Perhaps. But I'll tell you, if anyone is still supporting HD-DVD at this point they really need to look past their wounded pride and face the facts. Even after the Paramount deal the evidence against HD-DVD is more damning than it's ever been.
