(*Is there really not a thread for this already? A forum search came up empty)
Came out today on Hulu: Starring: Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Kyle Allen, Sean Teale, Bradley Whitford, and Minnie Driver. A comedic take on William Shakespeare's tragic romance Romeo and Juliet, told from the perspective of Juliet's cousin Rosaline, who is also Romeo's recent love interest. Heartbroken when Romeo meets Juliet and begins to pursue her, Rosaline schemes to foil the romance and win Romeo back. My thoughts: I really liked this movie. I just wanted to love it. The concept is entertaining enough and, being Shakespeare-adjacent, is right up my alley. The cast is great. I even enjoyed the use of modern music. It's just that the tone of it is just not quite what I was expecting. The comedy is a bit broader than I would have liked. Not really a flaw, just that a slightly different version of this would have worked even better for me. Still, it's a light, fun film that is definitely worth checking out. Side note: Is it just me, or did Dario look like a cross between Oscar Isaac, Noah Centineo, and Antonio Sabato Jr.? Meanwhile, Romeo reminded me of a young (10 Things-era) Heath Ledger or a very young David Keith. Last edited by cinemaphile; 10-14-2022 at 11:26 PM. |

I loved this. Hulu is killing it this year. It's a shame none of their movies will get a blu release.
The pop music covers in this movie are my new addiction. |

It's... pretty bad.
Not much of a fan of Dever (personally, she's made some problematic comments and, professionally, she's way too overexposed and dull), the direction was flat and uninspired, the music was obnoxious and doesn't really further the story, the writing was witless, very predictable and not as funny as they think it was, and I'm really getting tired of this "Shakespeare times but with modern slang" trope. What's next: Titus Andronicus, but with Big Macs instead of pies? But, Merced was the best part of it. Whitford's a delight, as he was in West Wing. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend watching the whole thing but just skip to the Juliet parts. 3/10 |
