Default The Upscalers

You know them, the people who swear up and down they can live with the upscaled version of a given movie.
I know a few upscalers myself, couple guys I work with. They are very new into the world of high definition entertainment, again very new. So one of them is over to my house to check out the work I've done on the theater and I put in Quantum of Solace for a good demo, you know the opening car scene, great picture, great sound... anyway, after it was done he actually says "I don't really see what the difference is".
This guy is watching a 42 inch LG, with an upscaler DVD player that he thinks is HD and plays his movies in HD and refuses to pony up for the Bluray.

I am at a loss. And as I thought about my friend the upscaler I came across a good number of them HERE, at bluray.com. What is wrong with these people?

And to give this a topic here are some of the worst upscaled movies that used to look good on CRT...

Braveheart
Gangs of New York
Lord of the Rings
All the Pixar movies - after seeing them Blu the upscaled DVDs remind one of pre-production animatics.
Willow

The list goes ever on and would probably include every DVD I own by the time I was done, just can't watch them anymore.

Thumbs up

I know how you feel, the only thing I watch on DVD anymore is TV seasons. I used to have over 400 DVDs but I sold or gave them all away this year, now all I have left is 240 blu-rays and 40 UMDs.

they dont see what the difference is because they dont care enough to see it. There is no way an upscaled movie could ever compare with a Blu Ray version of it. Tell him to get a better HDTV and do a comparison then.

I said this in another thread, but my mother is the same way. She owns a nice 42 inch Phillips HD set, but refuses to get hi-def cable or a Blu Ray player, because "it all looks the same to me." Its so frustrating.

Plain and simple -- they haven't done their research! When I first when shopping for my first HDTV, I ended up researching for like a whole year! It was right before the format war ended. I learned a lot of stuff on AVS Forums, so I tried to understand as much as I could, and I knew what I needed to look for for my needs (e.g., what I liked to watch, my apt lighting, was I going to play games or watch mostly movies, etc., etc.).

Probably one of the best things I learned was that graph that shows you the benefit of 1080p in relation to TV size and distance.

I went in thinking I was going to buy an upscaling DVD and I took a lot of time researching upscaling players for a while, but then my research led to Blu-ray and ended up being the best for my needs and wants (thanks to a lot of articles on CNET.com too).

And I'm just a girl!

But I agree with all.

It was like this guy was trying to piss me off or something. How could you NOT see a difference?

I think he is a little upset that he bought some inferior gear and is trying to make it ok in his mind.
