USA VHS 99 (V/H/S/99) (Shudder Original) - February 7th, 2023

Shudder Films (via RLJ Entertainment) will be releasing the newest anthology from the V/H/S franchise, titled V/H/S/99 on February 7th. I watched this via Shudder last month, and thought it was mostly good, though I don't think any of the stories were better than the ones in V/H/S/94.

Not as good as 94 but it's still a good movie.

I'll pick this up, but I'm really hoping they release Deadstream, I loved that one.

Not as good as 94, huh? I loved that one along with parts 1 and 2. How does it stack up with the series? Worth a blind buy?

Imo 94 has been the best in the series. 99 was good but not as good. Will be picking it up though. I liked the creativity behind some of the stories.

My ranking would be 94>2>99>1 (haven’t seen Viral) I enjoyed this one and while it’s my third favorite I’ll still buy it and watch it again. If you like this series (and especially if you grew up in the 90’s) it’s worth a blind buy IMO.

Looking forward to ‘85.

Personally I found '94 pretty disappointing but thought '99 was pretty good and got the series back on track with the first 2.

Hopefully this release will be in 1080p instead of 1080i like the '94 BD release.

Excited to pick this up and give it another Spin. I found it rather disappointing truth be told but hopefully it grows on me with repeated viewings as surprisingly even VHS Viral has gotten better with time for me. I love this franchise and am always down for more entries. This is an easy pre-order.

Tier 1:
VHS2
VHS

Tier 2:
Southbound

Tier 3:
VHS '94
VHS Viral

Tier 4: VHS 99

Interesting the differences of opinion for us VHS fans. I have it like this:

Tier 1
VHS 94
VHS 2

Tier 2
VHS 1

Tier 3
VHS Viral

I have yet to see 99 but will blind-buy it. I also can't bring myself to count Southbound in the VHS universe but if I did, I would put it in Tier 3 over VHS Viral, which would move to Tier 4.

94 > 99 > 2 > 1 > Viral

94 is the closest to what the VHS movies were supposed to be. It finally felt like a gritty, slimy tape found in a rotting box in an abandoned garage. All the segments worked perfectly and it just worked so well.

99 is close to being 94 good save for two segments that just fail: The Shredding and Gawkers. But it helps that the other segments are so good that they make up for those ones.

So if you liked 94, I'd say get 99 (especially if you liked Deadstream too).

Welp, just gave this a watch on Shudder as a friend warned me not to blind buy this one...and I'm glad he did. I think it's the worst one in the series. Yes, I preferred Viral over this one. This is the only one where I found no standout segment. For starters, I didn't like that it didn't have a wraparound. The first two segments were the only ones I found decent and closest in spirit to the others in the series but they weren't special and mostly devoid of surprises. I liked the creature/zombie effects, though.

Then came the third segment from Flying Lotus, which, much to my great disappointment, I thought was the absolute worst segment in the entire series. Just ridiculous on all fronts that wallowed in self-parody. I could go on listing what I hated about it but it's the one I was most looking forward to and it fell flat on its face. Tonally out of place with the rest of the series.

The fourth segment tried to refocus with a respectable take on medusa but it lacked suspense and intrigue.

The last segment brought things down once again, nearly as bad as the Flying Lotus segment with too much comedic elements that don't belong in the V/H/S universe, IMO. Its only saving grace were the creature effects but I did not like the characters one bit.

I really wanted to like this film! I'm a big fan of the series and loved 94 as the best in the series but this just didn't click with me. Too cartoonish compared to the others. Preorder cancelled but I certainly hope V/H/S 85 can get things back on track and be more like the others.

On a final note, the Danzig song in the end credits was cool!

Looks like this is getting a Steelbook. Hope that's not the only version to get similar to One Cut of the Dead and Tigers Are Not Afraid as I have a big dislike for steelbooks.

looks to be a WM exclusive, so I don't think it will replace the wide release BD. The database entry here is using the SB art for the regular release though, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Hopefully that's the case. Doesn't make sense why this movie is taking so long to get released.

"3 hours of bonus content" Are they just planning to give us VHS 85 as a bonus feature? That is a ton of extra content for a film like this.

Commentary then maybe some good behindthe scenes and loads of deleted scenes. Long interviews too.

God I want this release so bad. Been dying to dig back into the new return of VHS franchise.

Also happy Deadstream is getting a release too. Eventually.

Deadstream is getting a release!? I missed that announcement.

I'm looking forward to revisiting VHS 99 as well. I'm hoping it includes a teaser of some kind for VHS 85 since that has already been announced and may very well be coming this Halloween season.

Not officially announced. But the filmmakers mentioned a blu-ray.

I could also see Shudder releasing a tease of VHS85 online around the blu-ray release of VHS99.
