Hey everybody,
Right now I currently own a 5 year old Yamaha receiver with no HDMI inputs and is lacking severely in audio codecs. I am currently in the market for a new receiver but there are so many to choose from so I would love to hear some recommendations. I hoping to keep my budget at about $500 or less. I've been looking at the Yamaha RX V663 and also the Onkyo 607, but I'm having a hard time deciding between the two. My main goal is to be able to get all HD audio codecs for my speakers so I can truly experience the greatness of Blu-ray. ![]() P.S. I currently have a PS3 and have a Panny BD60 on its way from Amazon. ![]() Any other receiver suggestions would be much appreciated. ![]() |

Honestly if you choose either the Yamaha or the Onkyo you will be in good hands. Just make sure you have a decent setup of speakers to go with it. ![]() |

![]() Edit: Is the only difference between the Onkyo 606 and 607 the addition of 7.2 channel audio? They seem to be similar in price. Last edited by JurassicMass88; 07-04-2009 at 08:20 PM. |

Between the 2 go with the Yammy 663 otherwise add a few dollars to your budget and get a Marantz 5003 for $599 at www.abesofmaine.com

wow, i totally have more reason to swap to a sr5003 now.. feel so cheated the salesman was actually charging more for the v665 (initially but lowered it to the same price as the marantz, a cheap tactic to make me decide to buy now that i think twice about it).
marantz FTW. (esp after some comparison of specs and reviews online) |

i admit marantz isnt the definitive receiver... certainly not.
there is no definitive for that price range or even the price ranges above that. (unless you go for the top-line receivers) i tried denon and onkyo too.. didnt quite like the sound although no major gripes, but one major problem is they overheat easily... and that would equate to a shorter lifespan.. im looking for one that can carry over the long haul. but certainly i liked the sound from the sr5003. very natural without being too overbearing but yet filling the room more than nicely with the necessary oomph in action scenes. i was fooled into getting the 665 though.. haha. hope i can swap without any problems.. |

None of the receivers mentioned are bad by any means. All of them will have their pluses and minuses in the features department. When it comes to sound quality its all in one's preference. I own Onkyo and Harman Kardon, and I love both receivers. I am also a fan of Pioneer receivers, but I'm not much of a Yamaha fan. I've never heard Denon or Marantz, but I've always heard good things about both. The best thing to do is to listen to all brands and compare the features to make an informed decision with the price points in mind. There really is no bad decision here. Its all about the features you need and the sound you want.
