Is it possible for amps to have a break in period?

With older electrolytic capacitors there was a forming process that had to be used to get full potential of the component, however newer capacitors shouldn't require that apparently. I would think that since a speaker is a mechanical device there might be a change in its "quality" if say your new receiver has more power and has caused the speaker to have larger excursions and is now able to flex more easily to a larger displacement; this would also mean you played them louder than before as well. Overall I think BD has it stated correctly, more listener training than actual system difference. Enjoy what you think is an improvement, it's to your benefit!

BD I love those kind of historical test studies held by the Pioneers in the industry. Anywhere I can find more of this type of reading?

The idea of the brain break in never dawned on me. This is something to consider.
