Oh, boy.

One of the most highly anticipated 4K releases in a LONG time is possibly bungled, or, worse, misrepresented.

I take it Robert Harris doesn't have a lot of fans on this forum. Nobody seems to be taking him seriously on the proper Kino BD thread - yet. He even says the Blu-ray looks better

Yikes.

Some people also said Pelham 123 was a wax fest as well, which it definitely isn’t. Waiting is definitely a good policy with 4K classics releases.

I have to think some of the varying reviews w/ some of these titles is probably due to different setups. I'm still going to pickup Death Wish at this point anyways.

Yeah, he doesn't have a lot of fans here as his reviews seem hit and miss but when he describes a ton of DNR that's not a good thing. How can this be a new scan when the BD has more grain? Ugh. This was one I was really looking forward to getting.

Different studio, but I wonder if this is a Platoon situation.

Doubt it. Michael Winner's been dead for years.

I've always thought that.. it's the only way to explain some of these extreme differing opinions

To clarify, I was thinking more along the lines of how the UHD BD of Platoon looked like an old scan DNR'd where as the older BD retained grain.

Perhaps, but it could also be that different viewers have differing levels of knowledge on the quality of a scan, compression, DNR, etc and/or their tolerance for it.

I know this much, Kino will advertise if it's a master that's been preprepped by Paramount (Escape from Alcatraz, Nobody's Fool) or if it's been done by themselves outside of the supposed raw scan (Death Wish).

Keep in mind RAH has also mistaken artifacts as grain in the past with BD/UHD comparisons (Liberty Valance, The Godfather).

While I think there has to be a certain baseline of quality in a setup so that people are able to assess the content 'as is', at the same time some folks could literally have the greatest home cinema gear known to humankind with a giant projektion screen and still wouldn't be able to see DNR, EE, bad compression etc. That's not a swipe at any one person's opinion regarding this particular movie, more a general observation.

I couldn’t really agree with his opinion of COTC and other assorted Arrow releases either. Of course we’ll get caps soon, and all will be revealed.

It's one thing to take a "wait-and-see" approach when Harris heaps praise on a title, but if Harris says something negative it must be really bad.

Then again, Harris also has his take on UHDs from 2K masters in that thread and it's as simplistic as it gets. He has no interest in UHDs from 2K masters since there is no resolution benefit and they only add HDR for the image to pop on OLEDs. Uh..... ok.

I thought Harris' comment about OLEDs was strange. He suggests that those of us with the high end TVs are the ones that might see any benefit with this release. Well, thankfully I have an OLED so I guess I'll keep my preorder

Did he?

I thought he said there was no appreciable upgrade in 4K, not that the Blu is better.

Giving the image a 4 out of 5 overall and a "Pass", he doesn't seem to find it that bad. It's just an inconsistent review.

Direct Harris quotes:

"the Blu-ray disc has a more natural grain structure".

"the Blu has a more natural appearance".

"If I had to purchase one or the other, I’d go for the Blu-ray, and not the 4k".

Harris is, in essence, saying the Blu-ray is better.

Will wait for caps and people from here to chime in. Even if the remastered Blu-Ray is an improvement on the existing Warner Bros one, it'll be worth picking up for me since I don't have that one.

He amended his review to add a lot more details when directly comparing it to the Blu-ray.
