Now I can travel through interstellar space and come back to Earth in 1969 and I will know who Nova and Cornelius and Caesar really were. Talk about giving me a headache with them trying to tie up all the loose ends from 1969's Charlton Heston's epic. They did it, but it was rather strange. But neat, having set in a movie theatre in 1969 for one whole summer watching Charlton Heston burn up the screen with his coolness. i must have watched that movie 50 times that summer!
The 3d was gorgeous and was so down, but it is a story which is meant to get you down; humans screwing up such a pretty world and how needlessly mean and uncaring we can be. It's coming. Oh I miss Heston and Serling. |

Rewatched this yesterday afternoon. A very pleasing 3D presentation throughout and a big step up from Dawn in terms of 3D. In terms of the movie though I vastly prefer Dawn to War. This one is just so depressing and not really something I enjoy watching despite the stunning visuals and locations.

Agreed 3D is definitely way better in this than Dawn. But this movie is really depressing indeed. replay value is practically zero. Reeves makes dark movies. Really curious to see how he makes his Batman. It can't be as depressing as this. Even Cloverfield is depressing lol

Giving this a rewatch 2 years since my last post. Stunning looking movie with awesome 3D, really striking. The movie is just such a downer though and so grim. It's no fun to watch at all and fun is something I like to have when watching big, fx heavy movies like this.

Loved the film but did think the 3d could of been stronger . But didnt think war was a good tittle as it was mostly humans fighting each other . Would rather of seen the apes fight the humans in a big battle

Dawn is the one that rubs my the wrong way though, with the ludicrousness of apes, new to firearms suddenly being expert marksmen from horseback 2hilst flailing like a bull rider... The writers really could have done better. Heck it'd be more realistic if they just attacked brute force, and same outcome. Sorry to rant. I usually check my brains in at the door watching movies... ![]() |

Gave this my annual 2 yearly rewatch lol (scroll up, apparently i watch this movie once every couple of years). The 3D is really nice throughout, loads of great shots, the cinematography is striking too, great locations and some seamless CG environments. The VFX blow me away every time, they are just so, so good. So many modern movies fail to achieve VFX as convincing as this, I wish all movies looked this good.
Only 2 action scenes in a movie about war though, a couple of very brief action beats perhaps but there's the opening and then the battle at the end, and the battle at the end lasts less than 10 minutes. So much for the promise of a war lol, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes had more war in it than this one. This is a movie that i wish i enjoyed much more than i do, it's a hard movie to "like" IMO due to how grim and depressing it is. It's just 2 hours 15 minutes of animals suffering lol. I thought Dawn was a far more balanced movie in terms of ape and human characters and the conflict between them. There are no likeable human characters in this, apart from i guess the young girl. |

Love the 3d rewatching now, anyone notice the subtitles has overlap or ghosting in 3d? I have the US region A copy.

Anyway, if you read back through the thread there is some discussion of problems with the subtitles and not just in relation to the US edition. It may be a player issue, as most people did not notice any problems. |

I didn't get a chance to see this one in theaters but have Dawn of Apes blu ray 3D I saw in theaters and have on disc that I have to rewatch soon. It's an interesting movie. As Levcore suggested, it's a dreary, grim series.
Regarding the 3D, the field of view was very short in Dawn's 3D, so things tend to look flatter in that film in 3D for some reason if it was filmed in 3D mostly. I have to research. Not sure what the story is for War of the Apes' 3D. |

Director Matt Reeves didn't want to shoot DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES in native 3-D as he didn't want to have to "think about 3-D" during shooting and had originally preferred to do it in post. Weta Digital at that time convinced Reeves to shoot Dawn in native, as the trees and forest could potentially be a post conversion headache. Reeves relented and went with native 3-D, but kept the I/A narrow so he could still essentially not worry about any problematic 3-D shots later.
When it came time to plan for WAR OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, conversion technology had advanced enough where Reeves was able to shoot in 2-D and convert later. Ironically some of the 3-D shots in War have a bit more depth than Dawn, but not by much. I really like these first three of the rebooted series, and even with some minor nitpicking aside, feel they try to explain things better than the original series. As for the 3-D, it of course could have been better but I'm glad we at least were able to see these on 3-D bluray. Hopefully the eventual KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES sees a 3-D bluray release as well. |

That's true, it's good we got them on blu ray 3D. I'll keep an eye open for War of Apes blu ray 3D, which I don't have on disc yet. |
