Default Advice for plasma newbie

I'm looking to purchase my first plasma. I already own a Phillips LCD that I purchased a couple of years ago so i'm not an HD newbie

I've found some good deals on a VIERA TC-P46S1. I was just wondering if anyone actually owns one of these and what are your impressions? How does it handle gaming (PS3, Xbox)?

Thanks in advance!

I dont' own any of those brands but I do own a Plazma, and a PS3, and a Wii. There is a tiny tiny tiny bit of IR. but it goes away VERY VERY fast. normally it's only caused when a single image is on the screen for long periods of time. Very long periods of time. But as soon as another imgae comes up. Bye bye image. Then again from what i know the newer models even have les of an issue wiht this. so take this as you will. I love my Plazma.

How much money are you will to spend? Pioneer is the best plasma but they're expensive and going away fast. If you want a Panasonic, there's a new one coming out in the next several months. Its up to you.

Wait for the OLED this fall! PQ: CRT > OLED > PLASMA > LCD

Don't bother waiting for the "possibility" of anything better coming down the pike. If/when OLED becomes a commercial reality, you'll pay 2X+ for the same size set versus a good plasma. Not worth it until prices become competative. You'll be very happy with the S1. Games and movies will look phenomenal on it. Neo summed it up well.

I'm looking to stay around $1000 no more than $1200. I've seen several plasma's around this price that seem nicer than any LCDs in the same price range.

Of course you have, as you'd be hard-pressed to find ANY LCD that can come close to the picture quality of a comparably priced plasma. Stick with Panasonic and you'll be fine.

I'm not offended but REALLY???? It makes that much of a difference? I know for a fact Plasmas have better picture quality but the way you said it makes it sound like lcds are todays standard tv set.

Thats why I keep returning to this site, the members give honest opinions and support.

i had my choice of what i wanted.
i did a LOT of research before i bought my new tv.

the lcd's didnt cut it as far as picture quality....plus the 'delay time' they have is another killer as i play ps3 games on my tv.

Exactly! Where do these buckaroos come from...the man/OP asked for suggestions and we come up with sound advice on technology that will be within a general consumer's reach in 3-4 years time (perhaps!).

Go look at some of his posting history and you'll see.

I would go with a Panasonic Plasma. new things are always coming out you will never be able to keep up with it, buy what you want today and don't worry about tomorrow.

You can't go wrong with a Panny plasma. Absolute best deals in HDTV. I love mine.

You will get IR. This is just a fact with plasma. You however will not get burn-in unless you completely abuse your plasma for a year or so. Someone over at AVS posted some numbers about how long it would take for burn-in to actually occur and it was absurd - something like over a year in torch mode leaving a single image on-screen.

For the first hundred or so hours, just keep it on full-screen stuff. But even that is simply a precaution and not totally necessary now. Keep the pixel orbiter on, your settings in check (not in torch mode), keep it in Cinema mode, and use common sense and you'll be rewarded with a wonderful image.

I don't own the model you are looking at, but do own a plasma and absolutely love it. I play ps3/x-box, while sometimes there is a little bit of ir, it goes away quickly. You can't go wrong with plasma

I own the S1, and it's a great plasma. The color is awesome compared to any LCD I have seen. We do a lot of gaming on the plasma, too, and it handles it very well.

Good luck! I own 2 plasmas and haven't had any problems so far. I play video games a lot and only get IR sometimes. But it goes away really fast. It's probably been a few months since I've experienced it.
