Default PS3 Form Factor/Asthetics...

While looking through the awesome pics of the new BD players it dawned on me that while the PS3 is an awesome BD player it doesn't look like one. I'm curious if others think that the look of the PS3 has hindered the adoption of the PS3 as a BD player. From my own standpoint I could care less, but I found my wife's view on the subject interesting. I was telling her about all the features of the PS3 and all she could think of was how it looked and that it was a game machine. Then I show her an S300 and she likes it. I'm curious if the PS3 looked like the new Pioneer Elite, but played games would it be viewed differently. The same hardware under the hood, but a different asthetic on the outside. Wish they could come out with two versions, one that looks like an AV component and one that looks like a game machine, both appealing to different groups.

It's the nicest looking piece of hardware in my home theater setup. Maybe some people need a player that looks like a box, but to me it looks like a centerpiece.

I definitely like the esthetics of the PS3 in the vertical position, not so much in the horizontal.

I had to get a stand for it, just in case we get any earthquakes (being in California).

I got one that is very unobtrusive and blends in flawlessly with the PS3.

It definitely lends itself better vertically.

The two problems that I've noticed are that the fan is rather noisy and the finish of the PS3 is very fingerprint-prone...

The fact that the PS3 is a full-blown computer (even though it does not have the full interface of a computer), is its best asset when it comes to future expandability. Much more so than any stand alone player.

If I were a true gamer, I would probably appreciate that side of things better as well. I really bought the PS3 for the BD, music, picture and wireless capabilities...

When I first saw pictures of the PS3 a few years back I wasn't too crazy about its look. But now that I've seen it in person, I've definitely changed my opinion regarding it. I also prefer it vertically as opposed to laying horizontally though.

I prefer it vertically. I love the piano black finish, it matches my TV perfect. I have no fan noise problems (it's out in the open).

I thought Sony was debating making a component style PS3? Wasn't there a thread circulating about that quite awhile back? It would have all the current hardware, just look like another HT component. I thought it was a good idea. And yes it probably would gain alot more consumer interest with that look.

I have already. Don't worry it won't ruin it.

I have the 20 gb unit and in all black it looks really great. I know some like the chrome, but I think it would have been better if Sony had just used the all black model.

The thing is bulky and in some setups, such as apartment settings where everything has to be minimalist, I could see the PS3 turning off some people.

Then again, I highly doubt someone that concerned with aestetics would be purchasing a home entertainment system targeted to 20-35 males.

Let me preface this by saying, my wife hates electronics! When we, I mean I, was looking at getting a PS3, all she could think about was a $600 game machine. Then, one day we were walking through Best Buy and they had a Samsung 1080P tv hooked up to a BD player playing the loop of some movies. She loved the way it looked. When I told her the PS3 had a built in BD player, she was like, okay, let's get it! It is the best value on the market, period!

I wish it was a tray load, I hate slots, but I have a feeling it's to stop flip trays and other swap tricks *sigh*

That is one major reason and the other being it is very loud (the fans) compared too every standalone.

And here I was wishing my standalone was slot loaded. I hate trays. I guess it beats caddies any day of the decade.

Lightbulb I love my PS3, but here's a suggestion

I think it's very sleek-looking.

The one thing I miss on it when using it as an audio component is a front panel display. I hate having to turn on the TV to play music only.

I'm surprised that there is no front display offered by Sony (or a third party). It could plug into one of the front USB ports and display basic disc, track, and time info as well as the basics of XMB navigation. The PS3 is a very powerful and flexible computer and I'm sure this can be done.

I also stand my PS3 in the upright position because I think it's better for cooling. On processor intensive tasks (like gaming and folding) the fan sound is noticeable but still much quieter than many desktop computers I've had.

Most consumer A/V equipment has a fan in it these days (my TV and BD player do) and they are relatively quiet.

Even more rather have caddies. Keep the disc nice and safe. No fingerprints.

Rental really pushed for caddies for Blu

I have to put my ear up to the PS3 to hear the fan. Sometimes I think it's not on. But, it has never overheated so I guess it's working fine.

The PS3 is a rock solid machine. I don't think I could break it if I tried.

A beautiful investment.

Default love it.....awesome

like a bmw 645.....sexy......love the curves..... love the chrome.....I think it is the hottest device I?ve ever owned. The ps medallion near the disc slot? genius. The spider-man style font......classic. If they make a smaller one, they should keep the exact shape just compact. I will always keep this baby!

Love it up, down and all around. Love the slot and hate trays. I also don't hear it at all. It's in my room and I don't hear the fan(s) ever running. I do feel the warmth

There is a stand for it?

Here's kinda what I was thinking about:

Would something like this sell better to the general public. I'm a gamer, so I think it looks fine the way it is. I was just wondering if the general public would take it more serious as a BD player if it looked something like this.
