Default Open letter to the case fanatics.

First off this is not intended to start a flame war. This is something I've never understood and I mean to pick some brains and find answers.

I read many, many posts here from people saying how they hate Digibooks and other cases besides the standard ones. Enough that I finally have to ask why? Is it really because they look different on the shelf? Because every season of TV show (minus the few exceptions) comes in something other than a standard blu case and some of you that are so against the digi's have TV shows in your collections. For that matter many of you have steelbooks as well, which are not standard blu cases either yet no one is wishing steelbooks away, in fact many are clamoring for more.

So I guess it's mainly the digi-books that people have such a problem with. Me, I like them, I like that they come with that little book about the movie. I own Falling Down, Matrix, Amadeus and Shawshank in digi and like how they stand out. Granted I have Band of Brothers, the Discovery Atlas set, True Blood, Nature's Most Amazing Events, all the available Bond steelbooks and others that don't gel with the plastic cases either so it's no skin of my sack at all.

I just want to know why so much hatred towards them and not every other release that comes in the non-standard package. Seems inconsistent at best to me, or at worst like people are pissing and whining for no reason whatsoever.

Case fanatics I beg you.. shed some light.

lol..hahahaa i think it's same as the "used or new blu-ray" question. It's a personal thing. I personally don't care. I am not going to make such a big deal over a case. I totally agree with you when you say that some just whine and moan for no apparent reason. It's very O.C.D.

While I have no problems with digibooks, I think the issue comes down to the cases are taller and deeper than regular cases. It seems that most here (myself included) like there shelves to be uniform.

Most people have all their digibooks, regular cases, TV episodes, and steelbooks in their own, separate areas. Some even have their box sets on their own. Same with movie with slipcases. It all comes down to preference, some members are just more...vocal about their preferences than others.

no matter what you will have people who agree/disagree, tis the benefits of freedom. Freedom to decide whether they like/dislike something. A matter I don't think you will find a resolution to.

I bought my shelves originally that had the perfect spacing to hold BD cases before Bonnie & Clyde came out. Digibooks DO NOT FIT IN MY SHELVES!!

Used Blu-ray movies can still fit in my shelves, as their cases are the same. Digibooks, not so much. I don't see the correlation here. I just wish they would have made the digibooks the same size as the plastic BD cases. Then I wouldn't have a problem with them at ALL.

The reason why digibooks are disliked by many is the fact that they are taller and wider than normal cases.

Yes, I understand that many tv series and box sets are also different sizes, but typically only their thickness is affected.

I have a blu ray shelf that fits the movies perfectly, so I cannot stick a digibook in it without the risk of damaging the top and bottom. Plus, the movie sticks out like a sore thumb because of the wider case (caused by the binding) as I said before.

I can understand how some people couldn't care less about this issue, but just because it doesn't affect you doesn't mean people are crazy for thinking this way.

I get more bothered by the fact that different studios use different cases. Why couldnt they have all just used the same ones. I personally like the ones that Fox uses but wouldnt have cared which one they used.

Thank you guys for not immediately getting on the defensive. I hadn't even thought about custom shelving, aside from the digi's I have a few others, Discovery Atlas and NMAE off the top of my head, that wouldn't fit on a custom shelf.
I guess I also just assumed everyone alphebetized their collections A to Z, never thought about niche sections and things like that.

Oh and I hate the cases with the little plastic tab that never stays closed, I think Disney started that one but it seems to have spread.

Good point. If you look at my theater gallery (new room pic's)and scroll down to the bottom....place your hand up to the screen and cover the bottom row of my Blu-ry rack......now that looks nice. I've put mine (boxed sets) on the bottom row. Also makes them easier to access!

the correlation has to do with it being a personal preference. Read it right next time. yeah?

I just do not like them, they are fine if someone else wants them, I just want to chance to get it in the regular case, same goes for the TV shows

Now there's a detailed response...

"I just don't like them"

Sounds like my 4 year old daughter trying to explain why she doesn't want to go to bed yet.

"Because I just don't"

Is there a particular reason you "just don't like them"?

I don't dislike the steel books, digibooks or the TV show style cases (John Adams as an example). But I don't want them in my collection. And wont buy them until I can transfer them over to either normal cases or 3 disk case or a 5 disk etc. Its just my preference. I'm not picky like this with anything else other than my BD collection. Not sure why and cant really explain it.

I guess that confuses me a bit.. you have no problem with them but yet won't buy them until you can put them in regular cases?

huh?

Its not that hard to understand. I don't buy the movies with odd style cases until Im ready to move them over (meaning I have a substitute case in hand).

When I bought BoB I had a Blade Runner case ready to go for it. When I bought X-Men I had another Blade Runner case ready to go too. Its just my preference for doing things.

So then you DO have a problem with them, correct? If you didn't then you wouldn't go to such lengths to not have them.

I guess this is one of those things I'll never understand, who cares what kind of case the movie is in if it's a movie you want?

And yeah, the way you said it made no sense and WAS hard to understand. Like saying "I have no problem with white people, I just don't want any around".. see, makes no sense, just like whatever you were trying to say.

Your original post mentioned "hating them", I dont personally hate them nor do I have a problem with them. Im just not going to have them in my collection. I think both the digibooks and the steelbooks are kinda cool but not for my personal use in my collection.

You ask who cares what kind of case its in. Well obviously I do (and others as well).

Oh and I think you can not have a problem with white people but not want to be around them lol. To me thats a perfectly fine statement.

You ever seen those rearview mirrors that go from one side of the car to the other (passenger side to the driver side). Gives you great field of view. I think those are pretty cool and even serve a purpose (better field of view) but I don't and wont have one in my car. Its the same kinda of thing.

I hate digibooks.

I don't like that the disc isn't contained within a guaranteed sealed package. That's why I don't like them. That's why I prefer the standard blue case. As for collections and TV seasons on BD being in different cases, that's fine as well. They are mostly just thicker versions of the standard BD case. Collections (like the Die Hard Collection, Pirates Of The Caribbean Trilogy, Spider-man Trilogy, etc.) on the other hand should all be released with each film in an individual standard BD case... although The Ultimate Matrix Collection is the one exception as I don't mind the slim cases and box for that one. As a hardcore fan, I have no problem with that box sticking out from the rest. It shows my personal pride in owning it.

Steelbooks don't look that much different on my shelf. Besides, they are the only form of containment for my BDs which I feel is more durable for storage. They won't break nearly as easily. So, Steelbooks are ideal in design for any collector who values their purcahse. Digibooks work completely the opposite way. I don't feel their design has the products lifespan in mind. The 1 digibook I own had a thin layer of dust in it after only a couple of weeks on my shelf... and my house is not a very dusty place!

As for why we still purchase the non-standard case content? It's because we still want the content! It's a lesser of 2 evils scenario. If I really want it, I'll get it in whatever packaging is available. However, I can tell you now that I have passed on a number of Digibook titles because I wanted them, just not badly enough. Had they been released in standard case, I would have 5 or 6 more of those films in my BD collection.
