Yeah, the dramatic sequences were pretty good, but Mann is not very good with a handheld camera. Also, there should have been more of a balance between Depp and Bale, making it more of a Cops and Robbers movie.

Yeah the actors are great but they have nothing to work with, no development or anything.

For some reason, the Tomatometer at the top isn't updating, as it still says 40 fresh and 1 rotten review. The count is up to 94 fresh, and 5 rotten, which is pretty impressive.
There is only one review I have a problem with since it just seems completely poorly written. I don't mind people not liking a movie that I expect to like, but when a person isn't able to make legitimate complaints about a movie, then I don't think they should be able to counted on RT. Oh, and still no Armond White sighting, but I think everyone on RT is eagerly awaiting it so they can jump all over him. |

#1 Sorcerer's Stone - If you know absolutely nothing about the franchise, this does the best job of capturing the "why all the mania?" gee-whiz factor--Although, like any good superhero movie, it spends 90% of its time setting up the origins, backstories and explanations, rushes the actual plot in the last half hour, and leaves you hoping there'll be a sequel they can take their time on. #2 Chamber of Secrets - If you know Sorta Who's Who and What's What, you can probably jump in with this one, although Chris Columbus is kind of going on the assumption you've seen the first one. It's the first time the series took a stab at Big Plot (the first one plays around with it a bit), plants the basic [Show spoiler] conflict that the last four books revolve heavily around, and establishes the basic Hardy Boys Mystery feel of the sequel stories. Also, Book/Movie 6 specifically refers to what we find out in the climax, making it required reading, even if Columbus is a bit goofy-indulgent on the Funny Effects. (It's also hard to watch Richard Harris on his last legs, especially when Michael Gambon later proved to be so perfect in the role to begin with.)#3 Prisoner of Azkaban - Bit of a dark downer, but if you've had enough of Chris Columbus, this was where the franchise started to take itself Seriously. New directors chose Story over Cutesy, bring in a little artistic style, and push plot foremost...As for story-arc relevance, not much apart from introducing a few pivotal supporting characters, but a good-looking side story to come back to once you get hooked. #4 Goblet of Fire - The Even-Numbered Star Trek of the series. ![]() #5 Order of the Phoenix - Just goes to show how good the adaptations were getting: Readers hated the book, and it's one of the better movies. We don't particularly learn much between Stories 4 and 6 (rather like you didn't need to know what happened between SW Episodes 2 & 3, but could assume something had happened...)--But the climax boils the action down to the essentials, Radcliffe puts Harry's teen grumbles more in context, and Imelda Staunton makes the books' single most annoying character into a serviceably despicable baddie. Like #3, good-looking, but don't rush it unless you're hooked. And there you go--Finish just the two or three "necessary" stories, and you can still catch the Friday show. ![]() |

Thats not true at all. Many love book 5. Stop making such claims. It's my personal favorite as well. I go to Veritaserum as well (an HP site that I write fan fiction for) and it is very well praised.
Just came back from the midnight showing of HBP. Damn, I loved it. It was so well done. I was happy to see Luna with the lion hat on. |

Definitely.
1 and 2 are not great, really. They are just setting the scene for what is to come later in the series, after that we get Azkaban which is widely regarded as one of the best movies (it's also regarded as one of the best books!), 4 and 5 are pretty good, 5 is actually better than 4 but it requires repeat viewings. 6 is probably the best one of the lot and really sets up for a great finale with the two Hallows movies. |
